This was an excellent film, no too bloodthirsty (even in the big battle scenes>.
Cruise as a captain against rebel Japanese gets captured, and befriends rebel leader. Learns samurai way of life <bushido> and comes to gain respect within the community of "rebels". Falls in love with the widow of a warrior he killed, and lives in her house?BR> Tables turn when the emporer is not able to stand against the "white tyranny" and a garrison/army is sent to fight Cruise and the rebels ( a david v goliath thing ). Here Cruise faces his ex-army superior on the battle ground in a touching finale.
A good portrayal of Japanese customs, traditions and ethics I thought. No too OTT either, and a little humour thrown in for good measure.
