My cell phone was only twenty dollars to buy, and I only have to add another twenty dollars every three months. It doesn't have a camera, games, or other useless doodads. It's a PHONE, for crying out loud. I suppose it has text messaging but being middle aged, I don't even know how to use it. I generally accumlate time on it because I use it for its intended purpose only: to arrange rides and reach people that it's essential for me to reach when I'm not at home. (I don't have a car so that's a bit more important for me than the average person; I cannot simply drive to the nearest pay phone.) My kids have equally cheap cell phones. As a parent, I think they are a wonderful invention for the sake of safety if nothing else (no more nonsense about "Mom, I couldn't call because I wasn't near a phone.") The only reason I have a LAND LINE (a truly needless expense) is to support my DSL. If anything I can see land lines fading away, because they are ridiculously expensive.
