Mr Coffee has been a learning experience for me and I have enjoyed my ride so far.
We bought him at the auction ,he was the saddest little donkey i had ever touched. When i fist saw hiim he looked so sad and then i wentinto his pen and touched him and I was so overcome with sadness I almost cried.Steve and I had a $75.00 budget for a donkey we got him for 74.90 including tax.
He didn't seem to lead but being much larger then him we did  manage to get him on and off the trailer. He didn't coem directly home taht day we bought but spent the night on the trailer of a friends and they bought him to our house the next day.
Now out Mr Coffee is a young donkey and was already gelded. He didn't move so great at first ,But did seem to be less sad after we brought him home na dput him in with our mini horse Mr Bean. I spent most of teh firts 2 montsh he was here just getting to know him and spending tiem with him .Through this time i was concerned about his lack of energy and his touchy back. When the wether got cold i called a good friend who has a friend that has donkeys and got some good Donkey advice.
Coffee's biggets problem was teh cold and thier inability to handle it.Hence his blannkets and his grain which i add salt to to encourage him to drink. Also found out why we had a leading problem as well .
Donkeys will not follow like a horse does. They are not stubborn just smarter then we are and insist on being treated as a smarter animal.Once you treat them with the respect they  want then you pretty much just have to talk to them .I know i just talk to Coffee and he knows. When its going to be too cold for him he waits at teh gaate and insits that you bring him into the barn.
Coffee is an absolute joy to have around he is the most lovable littel brat here and knows it.
He is now a happy boy (except for Viper being mean to him today) he leads and is a great addition to the family.
Please feel free to ask any question I have lots to share that I have learned and if I have no idea then WhosInCommand has teh inside track  to donkeys as she is teh one who helped me get teh info i need to make Coffee'e life better .
Kim

I see donkeys at the auction all the time and your right most of them there
looked very sad I think that what draws me to them, and it always the
smallest or skinny, I was always scared that I might not be able to handle
one , I have see some out of control donkeys never thought to look at the
person that own them,I have learn much since getting my beloved animals.and
do they mix well with goats I know my show star mikey(he,s been to 2 school
plays played a goat of course) has the greatest personality and would want a
donkey pushing him around,he so pasive were do you live that its sooooo!
darn cold I am thinking of the next aution donkeys here go for 30-50 dollars
not much big and small, thanks wendee

i too rescued a donkey girl ..... she was 10 months old lived in a field neglected with a large herd of horses who did not get enough to eat .... the guy only put out 2 round bales a week for approx 15 horses ....only a small run in barn where of course only the top horses could go for shelter .... this was in the winter ...there were times when i drove by that there was no hay for a few days ..... the humane society was always being called so he would put out more crappy hay and they could do nothing ... at any rate i kept seeing this little donkey trying to get hay , sneaking in and they of course having to dart away from the horses before they bit or kicked her ..... i went in and told the guy i wanted her .... so he told me 500.00 i said no i just wanted her before the humane society came again ..... he even delivered her .... not very gently tho .... she was covered in ringworm , skinny and sooo sad lookin and of course scared ... he suggested that i just put her in with my mare and her foal well she came charging at poor Belle like she was gonna kill this colt eating monster ..... i put her in her own stall and told the guy they would make friends my way with nobody gettin hurt..... then he had the nerve to ask if my colt was for sale ..... this was in january ..... i had the vet and the farrier out that week .... poor baby she was not impressed ..... i worked with her all winter .... she would not leave the barn unless i went outside with her into the paddock.. she worked all that winter and spring on my mare ... just staying out of her reach outside the stall bars ...... then when Freebie {my mare }had her foal she got to be with Echo {the now 1 year old} oh how she loved that ..... i finally decided the time had come to let them all out together and while freebie would chase her away there was no murder in her eyes anymore......now 2 years later they are a {family} herd Freebie is alpha , Echo the boy and Belle is the one who protects the herd from all things evil in the world which includes the vet and the farrier .... she knows their vehicles and always tries to get the horses to run away LOL ....she is the most lovin girl and smart too ... i can't see life without her and neither can the rest of the crew here

Gotta love those donkeys, Mr Coffee has since dropped ( he is not gelded) and will soon be going to vet to fix that lttle problem.I have to say though that for a Jack he has been pretty awesome though by end of sumer his manly antics have become some what of a pain for all of us.
Brodie has taken to crawling on him when he is loose in teh yard ,I have pics but they are on the 35 mm but will get them posted  next week.
The minis now have a new pen ,larger and cleaner LOL.
Would love to see pics of Belle. I just love my minis.

Here is Coffee and B .Though Coffee is not broke to ride he is a sweet boy that puts up with Brodie climbing on him wherever he takes a fancy.Though this will be the last year for B to do that I know that I can at least put little ppl on him and he will do well as a lead line guy
