Cockatiel Bread

bullet 2 C cockatiel crumbles 
bullet 1 banana 
bullet 1/3 C wheat germ oil* 
bullet 6 eggs--with shell 
bullet 3T pumpkin, yams or squash 
bullet 1/3 C vegetable oil 
bullet 1 1/2 T applesauce or 1/2 apple 
bullet 1 C thawed frozen mixed vegetables 
bullet 1 C cooked dry beans 
bullet 1 C cooked brown rice 
bullet 2 C corn meal 
bullet 4 T baking powder

Food process first 8 ingredients. Add beans & rice and blend until pulverized. Add to cornmeal and baking powder. Mix well. Add water if too thick. Bake at 325 degrees for 40 minutes until done. I freeze the stuff crumbled, zap about 1T per bird per day. When they are feeding chicks, I double that. *You can find wheat germ oil (for horses) at most feed stores.

 

Cornbread for Finches and Canaries

bullet 1 cup whole wheat flour 
bullet 1 cup cornmeal 
bullet 2 eggs beaten 
bullet 1/2 tspn.(iodized) salt 
bullet 1/4 cup canola oil 
bullet 1 cup milk 
bullet 1 tbsn. soybean isolate 
bullet 1 tspn. brewers yeast 
bullet 1/4 cup raw wheat germ 
bullet 2 tbpn. sucanat (evaporated sugar cane) 
bullet 1 tbpn. baking powder (non-aluminum) 
bullet 1 tspn. powdered vitamin

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Butter an 8"x8"x2" Pyrex baking pan. Mix all ingredients in a medium bowl Bake for 25 minutes. It may be cut into squares and frozen, to be thawed for later use. 

Macaw Bake

bullet 3 eggs with shell 
bullet 3 eggs with shell
bullet 1/4 lb. fried hamburger 
bullet 2 cups cooked beans (see bean mix below) 
bullet 1 - 6oz jar baby food 
bullet 3/4 cup honey or coarse brown sugar 
bullet 3/4 cup peanut butter 
bullet 1/4 cup powdered soy milk 
bullet 1 cup corn meal 
bullet 3/4 cup shredded carrots 
bullet 2 cups oatmeal or wheat flakes 
bullet 1/2 cup oat or wheat bran 
bullet 2 tbls. wheat germ oil 
bullet some Spiralinea if available

Preheat oven to 375 degrees Mix everything together and divide into 2 greased loaf pans Bake for 30 to 45 minutes, or until top of bread is light brown. Bean Mix - Red Beans, Black-eyed Peas, Great Northerns, Lima Beans, Kidney Beans, Pinto Beans, Soybeans equal to the total amount of mixed beans. Soak for 24 hrs, bring to a boil with a little salt and let sit for a couple of hours. Drain and rinse. 

Parakeet Seed Mix

bullet 3 parts canary seed 
bullet 1 part hemp 
bullet 2 parts white millet 
bullet 1/2 part oat groats

Mix and store in air-tight containers.

Chick Weaning Bread

bullet 1/3 cup wheatgrass powder 
bullet 2/3 cup biscuit baking mix 
bullet 1-1/3 cup ground pellets 
bullet 1/3 cup hand feeding formula 
bullet 2/3 cup oatmeal (any style) 
bullet 1-8½ oz. box Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix 
bullet 2-1/3 cup fruit juice 
bullet 1/3 cup vegetable oil
bullet 5 eggs with shells (may be beaten in blender)
bullet Fresh chopped or frozen fruits & vegetables
bullet Chopped nuts 

Mix all ingredients together in a large mixing bowl. Batter should be thin; add more juice if necessary. Bake in a 9 x 13 inch greased pan, at 350° for 25-30 minutes. Cut into cubes and freeze. Serve thawed cubes daily while babies are weaning. Do not eliminate the rest of the weaning diet. Also if the baby is still on a commercial hand feeding formula be sure not to add any calcium to the bread.
