Goddess Ariadne, the Goddess of the Labyrinth, is originally a mortal princess, daughter of King Minos of Crete. Ariadne gives Theseus, prince of Athens, the ball of string that guides him silently into the Labyrinth to the sleeping Minotaur, the half man/ half bull monster that requires fourteen youths to be sacrificed to him each year. Theseus kills the Minotaur, follows the string back out of the Labyrinth and sails away to Athens with Ariadne, whom he promises to marry. Theseus abandons Ariadne on a deserted island so he can sail away to marry another woman. Ariadne dies of grief. God Dionysus resurrects her and makes her his wife and Goddess of the Labyrinth.
