Cailleac Bhuer
  • Land of Origin: Scotland
  • Other Origins: Similar faeries are in other countries
  • Other Names: The Blue Hag,   Black Annis, The Stone Woman
  • Element: Water

Appearance & Temperament: The Cailleac Bhuer (Call-y’ac V’fhoor) is one of a kind. She is an old woman who walks by night carrying her stick and her carrion crow on her left shoulder. She has a reputation as dangerous and ill-tempered, however, this may be a mistaken one. It is possible that this fear of her was created by the early Scottish churchmen seeking to eradicate the vestiges of the Old Religion by demonizing its Crone mythology.

Time Most Active: At night

Lore: The word Cailleac literally means “old woman? and the Irish spelling Cailleac is used when referring to the Crone Goddess. This is from the same root as the more well-known Gaelic word for a young girl, Caillin (Colleen).

There is only one Cailleac Bhuer, and she is probably a vestige of the Old Crone Goddess of the Celts. She is depicted as wearing either black or blue-white tattered garments and is intimately associated with the winter season. She is said to dwell in a land which is always in winter - another likeness to the Crone. Her power is greatest from Samhain to Ostara, at which time it wanes considerably. She carries a staff made of holly topped with the head of a carrion crow, another symbol of the Crone. If one is touched by it, it kills instantly. Scottish legends say that the staff is buried under a tree for summer and retrieved again Samhain night. If one can find that staff they will have power over the destiny of humans.

In modern Scotland, Cailleac Bhuer is more commonly called by her English name, the Blue Hag. She still walks alone through the Highlands at night where she is greatly feared.

Where To Find Her: In the Scottish Highlands, or near the western sea in Faeryland. The best time to look for her is during the waning moon.

How To Contact Her: Do not fear her, but do use caution. Try making an evocation to her with the same respect and reverence you would give to the Goddess in her guise as Crone. She is most likely a Goddess - merely one in a devalued state.

Magical & Ritual Help: Undetermined, but if she is part of the Goddess - even one who has been devalued over the years - this faery could aid in any type of magic and ritual with powerful results.

Bean-Tighe

  • Land of Origin: Ireland
  • Other Origins: None Known
  • Other Names: Our Housekeeper
  • Element: Earth

Appearance & Temperament: No one has ever fully described a Bean-Tighe (Ban-tee or Ban-Teeg), but they are generally thought to look like small elderly women in old fashioned peasant clothing, with kindly, dimpled faces. They are very friendly to humans and wish to have a friendly human house to watch over.

Time Most Active: All year, but especially from Samhain to Bealtaine when Irish families spend most of their time indoors.

Lore: The words Bean-Tighe literally mean “woman of the house? She is the opposite in temperament to a Beansidhe. They are faery housekeepers, rather like the Brownies of Scotland, who can be found watching over children, hearths, and pets. It was believed that they would finish up any household chores left undone by the tires mother of the house.

They love fresh strawberries and cream. A bit of it and to share your home is all the reward they ask.

Bean-Tighes were thought to be on exceptionally good terms with the old village wise women of Ireland. Old women in Ireland had to be especially careful not to keep too clean a home or they would be accused of having a faery living with them, which would make them guilty of witchcraft.

Where To Find Them: At your hearthside

How To Contact Them: Call out to one, open your home to her, leave out her favorite foods. They prefer to live in rural homes with children and fireplaces. Even if one will not take up residence with you, she will offer blessings to your home.

Magical & Ritual Help: Protection of home, children, and pets, and aid in household chores. She will happily lend her energy to human fertility spells as well.

GITTOS

Land of Origin: Wales

Other Origins: None Known

Other Names: Griffith, Griffin (also spelled Gryphon and Geetoe)

Element: Air

Appearance & Temperament: Gittos (Ghee-toes) have the heads of horses and the bodies of goats, but they have human speech and laughter. Though they have no wings, they can fly for short distances. They do not like people.

Time Most Active: All year, but especially at harvest time

Lore: Like their cousins, the Irish Phookas, the Gittos like to blight crops and claim for themselves all crops left in the field after sundown on Samhain. They have an intensely malevolent nature and would love to harm humans if given the opportunity. Fortunately for us, they don’t seem to know just how to do this.

Where To Find Them: In the fields after sundown between Samhain and Bealtaine.

How To Contact Them: Contact NOT advised!

Magical & Ritual Help: None

Phookas

Aka : Kornbockes, Bookhas, Bwcas, Pouke

Race : goblins

Origin : Ireland,Wales,Scandinavia

Element : Air.

Appearance : They have heads resebling human males, but the bodies of horses, pigs or goats. They can fly for limited distance and run in destructive packs when on war.

Function : The Phookas lay claim to any crop which is not harvested by Samhain night, and to cut a plant after this time risks provoking these dangerous faeries and their malevolence. Phookas love potatoes, and at night they come to harvest them from the untended fields. In Ireland, a folk legend says that potatoes dug after sunset are the tastiest and they never rot, but to get at them one risks encountering a Phooka.

Friends/Foes : As seemingly friendly, shaggy, sway-backed pony Phooka offers the unwary traveller a welcome lift; but once astride he is taken for a wild and terrifying gallop across the wettest and most thorny country, eventually to be dumped headlong into the mire or deposited in a ditch. Wreaking havoc is their favorite pastime, and they will go out of their way to harm children and crops. They also readily steal with a preference for babies, cattle and gold.
