Conditioners

  1. Mayonnaise is a great conditioner for dry hair. Depending on the length of your hair, apply approximately 1/2 cup of mayonnaise to your dry hair. Work into hair really well and then cover your hair with a plastic bag, allowing to set for about 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and then shampoo as usual.

  2. In a blender or food processor, combine 2 1/2 tablespoons dried milk, 1 tablespoon wheat germ oil, and 1 egg. Apply evenly to hair and let set for at least an hour. Shampoo and style as usual.

ROSEMARY HAIR RINSE
(especially for dark hair and/or dandruff/scalp problems)

2 oz. sprigs of rosemary
1 1/4 cups cider vinegar
10 drops rosemary essential oil

Make this rinse in the same way as chamomile rinse. Use it once a week to assist with scalp problems - it also adds shine to dark hair.

Hair Perfume

It is pleasant to perfume the hair after washing it when the hair is half dry. The following ingredients are required to make this fragrant perfume

  • 6 tablespoons powdered charcoal
  • 5 tablespoons powders myrrh
  • 1 tablespoon powdered benzoin
  • 1 tablespoon potassium nitrate
  • 2-3 drops oil of bergamot
  • 2-3 drops of sandalwood
  • mucilage of tragacanth

Mix the powders together and sieve, and then add the oils. Add the potassium nitrate, and then sufficient mucilage of tragacanth to make a stiff paste.

Heat the mixture over a water bath and then make into little cones and dry. Just light one of the cones and let the smoke go into the damp hair.
The smell is highly aromatic and exotic

HOME COLORING TIPS
You can get really results with the new home-coloring products. They have become so easy to use that they're practically fool proof, and ever so natural-looking.
* Deep condition before you color
* Wait two days after shampooing before coloring. The color will adhere better, since your scalp is more sensitive after shampooing, it will make the process more comfortable. Plus the natural oils in your hair will protect it.
HINT: Here's a bizarre secret to getting hair color off your hands and around the hairline. Rub the stains with wet cigarette ashes.

NATURAL HAIR COLORING

Dark Hair
Dark Haired beauties can create a temporary color with tea, walnuts and coffee.
* Brew a strong tea and use a final rinse. Boil one cup of chopped walnuts with one cup water. Strain the liquid and pour over head. Leave on thirty minutes before shampooing. Brew and espresso or other strong coffee. Add to dry hair. Leave on thirty minutes before shampooing out. This will add sparkling highlights to black or brown hair.
* Combine 1/2 cup vinegar with 1/4 cup soy sauce to give highlight and subtle coloring to dark hair. The soy sauce not only has protien for strenght, but also brown pigment. Leave on fifteen to twenty minutes. Wash out thoroughly.
* use 1/2 cup cranberry juice as final rinse to enhance red hair or create a subtle red highlights to dark hair.

Light Hair
Brew a cup of very strong chamomile tea. Let it cool to lukewarm. Spray or comb into dry hair. Leave on twenty minutes (if possible sit in the sun). Shampoo and rinse. This gives a color lift and subtle highlights to blonde and light brown hair

Lemon Hair Spray

This is simple, but it works well. It also adds body to fine, limp hair, and it gives light hair added shine.

2 lemons, sliced
2 cups hot water

Place lemon slices and water in a glass or enamel pan and bring to a boil. Immediately reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, until the water is reduced to 1 cup - about 30 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.

Line a strainer with cheesecloth and strain the mixture. Squeeze the cloth out thoroughly to get all the juice. Pour the strained mixture into a pump-type container. Mixture will keep for 1 to 2 months in the refrigerator.

Rhubarb Hair Color

For bright lights in fair hair.

3/4 ounce rhubarb root
4 cups pure water

Simmer rhubarb root in water in a covered nonmetal pot for one hour. After cooling and filtering out solids, apply to the hair as a final rinse, pouring the liquid through again and again. Effects are permanent warm/bright overtones. Red wine may be used instead of water for a warmer tone.
