Rare artefact found in North Guwahati
By A Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, July 4 ?Finely curved Shaivite figures in a stone block were exposed on the residential campus of Dabaru Barman of North Guwahati Anandapur village on July 1. The site is close to the Kanai Barasi Bowa rock inscription site in North Guwahati. The stone relic was found in a ditch measuring 2.54 metres by 1.55 metres at a depth of 89 cms, said Director, Archaeology Dr HN Dutta.

The stone block measuring 1.10 metres in height, 58.9 cm in width and 70 cms in thickness, was found with Shaivite figures in its three sides.

Dhananjay Barman, son of Dabaru Barman, first saw a part of the relic and tried to dig it up with the help of the local people, who extended support to him enthusiastically to retrieve the temple relics safely, said Dr Dutta.

The conscious people of the locality want that such cultural artefacts should be preserved with due care at public places for proper study.

Deputy Director of the Archaeological Directorate Ranjana Sarma rushed to the spot after being informed of the exposure by the Directorate and met Dabaru Barman and his son. She discussed better preservation of the relic with the Barmans and the local people. Dabaru Barman readily agreed to the suggestion of Deputy Director Sarma that the object needs to be preserved in public places for proper study, Dr Dutta said.

Bhabani Barman, Apurba Gogoi, Ananta Das and Gunamoni Singh of the Directorate assisted Sarma, said Dr Dutta
