~ Lesson # Five ~

I think it is safe to say that we all share one common aspiration: we all want to be happy; no one wants to suffer. This universal desire binds us together. At some point the realization dawns that no matter how big the paycheck is, no matter how many degrees we get, no matter how nice the house and the white picket fence is, none of it can assure happiness. What is it that does bring lasting happiness, no matter what the circumstance? The ancient poet and mystic Rumi gives us a clue when he says, "Work in the invisible world at least as hard as you do in the visible." The invisible world is within you, and it’s where lasting happiness resides.

Here are some suggestions for working in the invisible realm:

1. Look closely at what causes lasting happiness. Buying a new sweater might feel good for a moment or two, but looking closely you see that that sooner or later all new stuff loses its appeal, growing old and mundane. Reinforce in your mind that happiness is not the result of accumulating goods.

2. Savor the moment. When your child gives you a bear hug, live that experience fully, whilenoticing every little detail. The same holds true for the boring meeting that’s putting you to sleep. As Leo Buscaglia, the author of Love, says, "Braille your world." Being mindful doesn’t mean things will be good, just that you are aware of them as they are, without judgment.

3. Expand your awareness. See new perspectives by challenging your own beliefs. Expand your horizons by asking yourself, "What if?.

4. Play. Between work, family, and grocery shopping, finding time to play can be just another chore. Forget picking up that gallon of milk on the way home from work today. Instead, tickle your children.

5. Practice gratitude. Focus your mind on all that you already possess, relegating that feeling of "needing more" to its proper place. If it works for Oprah, it works for me.

6. Follow the yes path. Margaret Wheatley, best-selling author of Leadership and the New Science, says that when events call out yes, follow that path. It’s certainly easier than banging your head against the wall.

7. Take time for self-reflection. Since childhood, we’ve been asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" A much better question to ask is "How do I want to be?"

8. Choose to live your values. After reflecting on your personal values, instill them in your everyday actions.

9. Experiment. Philosopher Nietzsche said, "Life is a thousand times too short for us to bore ourselves." Give yourself permission to try something different, without obsessing over the outcome.

10. Listen. Get your mind off your own problems by lending an ear to hear others.

11. Stay present. Think about this... when you wash the dishes, just wash the dishes. The mind’s habit is to rehearse what the future holds or re-run life by mulling over past events. This moment is where life actually is lived.

12. Smile. It’s such a simple way to change your inner landscape and connect with others.

13. Know that life is finite. You are not guaranteed a tomorrow. Your life is precious. Live it fully.

14. Happiness is here, in this moment. George Bernard Shaw said, "Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself." Know that there is nothing to magically "find" for happiness; it’s created through you.

15. Notice your breath. It’s not difficult to simply notice the air entering your body and then watching it exit, but it has a powerful effect. Use it to re-focus from the hectic outside world to an attitude of mindfulness.

16. Give. Whether you gift the gift of time, money, or knowledge, sharing transforms the mind.

17. Your path to happiness is uniquely yours. Thomas Merton said, "Looking for God is like seeking a path in a field of snow; if there is no path and you are looking for one, walk across the field and there is your path." It’s the same for happiness; you make your own path.

18. Drop the guilt trip. Go ahead and have a night out with a friend. See the sappy show that your husband wouldn’t be caught dead at.

19. Spend time in nature. Get out of a world lit by fluorescent lights and divided by cubicles. Take a walk in the woods. At the very least put a plant in your office.

20. Go to bed early. Never underestimate the power of a good nights sleep.

Joseph Campbell, who is best known for his forays into Mythology, cited a Polynesian saying to describe the state of humanity: "We are standing on a whale, fishing for minnows."

What you are looking for—what we are all looking for—is as close as your own self. Happiness is the whale right under your feet. ...

As you do this next meditation, I want you to think about your happiness within...and see what you experience in this special journey.

Meditation # 5

"The Sleigh Ride"

by

Lady Majyk Whispering - Owl

Breathe deep and ground yourself as you are used to doing and do this at least four times as you feel your body relax and prepare itself for meditation and the journey ahead. Breath ...1..2...3 ....4... exhale slowly...1...2...3....4. and again...

As you close your eyes you find yourself breathing more shallow , you feel the coolness of the winter morning hit your nostrils and smile as you breathe in the morning air.

You look across the sunlit pasture, full of diamonds glittering on the fresh fallen snow. It is a beautiful day and the crispness of the air is invigorating. It isn't really cold, but still you grab a muffler and wait.

As you take in the scene, you hear a jingle in the distance and look toward the deep green forest that seems to be laced with white fur coats donning each tree. It is a scene that you have enjoyed every Yule season.

The jingle gets louder and you see the sleigh pull up and stop. Waiting for you to board. It is a glorious sleigh with filigree scrolled sides. The playfulness of the sleigh's grace is very inviting and luxurious. This is a deep scooped carriage sporting a velvet seat that you know is plush with softness.

The second seat in front was filled with the girth of an elderly man you instantly knew had much experience with the sleigh and the animal that pulled it. The horse is massive and it's mane flowed slightly with the toss of it's head. You knew it's mass and rippled muscles could pull much more than the sleigh. This Belgian horse was used to hard work and was happy to be out and doing light pulling this day. The driver jumped down and checked the harness as he patted the beast. He turned with a grizzles wink and smile.

You walk over with the snow crunching under your steps The driver helps you up and you snuggle into the furs that lay on the cushioned bench seat. As you settle in with only your nose peeking from the warmth of the furs, the sleigh starts with a slight jerk. You again hear the rhythm of the sleigh bells and the slap of the leather and the yoke. The horse's mane is bouncing and you love the aroma of the ride.

As you drift you see a covered bridge and wonder where it appeared from. As you approach, the driver turns and smiles.

He is ancient and a white beard is all you can make of his face. He is dressed in fur and Holly is crowning his shrouding head covering. He seems happy and you again smile. As you get closer to the bridge he asks you how your year has been and you think about everything that has happened. So much flashes through your mind and you take time to tell him...(pause and "tell him")...

You continue to relay the year's happenings when the sleigh enters the covered wooden bridge.

It is dark in this place and you notice it is longer than you thought. you can no longer see the driver or the horse that pulls you in comfort. You are silent and think of what could lay ahead. the jingle of the bells assure you that all is fine and you are moving ahead. The darkness envelopes you and you snuggle deeper into the comforting furs, not knowing what lay ahead. the sleigh stops and you hear a voice to the lower side of the sleigh. "It is fine, my child...do not worry ...the railings just need waxing to be able to continue.."

You leave the old man to his work and feel the comfort of the fur and sleigh cradling you. You feel the need to sleep and you drift away.

As you dream, you think of the Goddess and her love and how Her earth is snuggled in as you are snuggled and encased in warmth. You smile in the dark and make plans for your future...(pause and think of what those are...)

Soon there is a weight on the sleigh and the movement of the horse and carriage is felt with a jerk. The rhythm of the harness bells resume their music and the light is seen as the bridge end is approached. The sun greets you as you emerge and the diamonds are all around you once more ...even more brilliant than before.

As you glance at the old driver. You noticed that he has changed and is now in his prime. He sports Fresh Oak leaves and his vestige is leather and fur. He ripples with strength and you know that there has been a wonderful change. This viral man is one that is surly in charge and confident of his plight. He is one you feel safe with.

You breathe deep and wonder how long you were in the darkened bridge. You feel so refreshed and ready for the newness of the day as the sun shines brightly overhead. This review of your year and plan for your future has been good and you feel ready to proceed with the plans.

As you aproach the end of your ride, you smile and say good-bye to the driver. He smiles with a wink and you feel a flush of warmth fill you from the inside out. This is a wondrous Figure and he assures you that he will always be here for you when you need him.

With that you turn and stroll to your destination. You breathe deep and count back from ten to one. With each number, you feel more refreshed and well. You reach number one and stretch and are wide awake and ready for a wonderful day
