Over the last couple of years I have put on a huge amount of weight thru bad eating habits, depression and stress.  I had a hospital appointment the other day to check on my heart defects and the ECG was definitely abnormal.  The cardiologist says I have to lose weight to save my life.  It is so embarrassing as I have only myself to blame and could really kick myself for letting depression and stress get to me.  The real embarrassing part is having to admit to myself that I do have an eating problem and that I have put my life at risk.  I have to lose a minimum of 64kg.  I have done it once before about 5 years ago.  I have already stopped buying coca-cola and junk food and have bought up huge on fruit and veges.  I have started walking as exercise doing 20 minutes a day for the last 3 days as I am so unfit I can't really do more.  I will build my fitness levels up.  My goal is to lose 1kg per week.  It is going to be hard work but I thought that if I had this thread I could write my progress down.

I think I have it now. The GF diet works WHEN I don't use 'diet' soft drinks and keep the fats and sugar levels down.

I have the diabetes back under control and its been 22hrs without a BM- nasty or otherwise!

The nausea has gone and I can now drink (water only) The bloating and gas is way down too.

Weight loss so far (51 days) is 25kg. (kids- don't try this at home!)

Os, that's positive news. Out of interest, are you into home baking? If you're interested I have a lot of Dad's GF recipes for baking that have been adapted by him into GF from Mum's favourite recipes. You cannot tell the difference. If you would like some, post your email address and I'll start emailing recipes to you.

when I wrote that I hesitated to add my bit to the conversation cos you were getting suggestions from others, you didn't seem to have had proper diagnosis, and because I avoid diet drinks like the plague and don't know just what artificial sweeteners are in them.

The subject of aspartame poioning is a very controversial subject. I have been interested in it for years.  It is interesting how it seems to break down in metabolism.

You and others usng diet drinks and artificial sweeteners may be interested to read about it it you haven't already.

Saw the specialist today. Lost more blood, but the people at the hospital can get it out painlessly- unlike them at Featherston!

Got a tiny little vial for a stool sample- they should have given me a bucket!

I go in for a photo shoot in a month or so and I'm pleased to know I will be sedated!

Another 5kg lost in the last three weeks.

You haven't been chewing lots of gum have you Os?

Chewing gum causes chronic diarrhoea

PARIS: Individuals who chew lots of gum with sorbitol, a sugar substitute that is also a laxative, may suffer from diarrhoea so chronic that it could cause a severe loss of weight.

In an unusual case study reported in the British Medical Journal, gastro-enterologists at Berlin's Charite hospital describe how they investigated two patients who had persistent diarrhoea.

One was a 21-year-old woman who had been experiencing diarrhoea and diffuse abdominal pain for eight months and had lost 11 kg of her 51.8 kg body weight. The other was a 46-year-old man with flatulence, abdominal bloating and diarrhoea so bad that he had lost 22 kg, or a fifth of his body weight, over the past year.

"Considerable, unintended weight loss"

But the doctors were flummoxed when blood tests, colonoscopies, ultrasound and computed tomography scanners all showed the patients were otherwise healthy. Their next step was to examine electrolytes in the patients' stools, and these showed extremely high levels of potassium and sodium.

Questioned about their dietary habits, the young woman said she chewed on more than a dozen sticks of sugar-free gum each day, and the man used up 20 sticks and also ate up to 200 g of sweets each day. According to the doctors' calculations, the female patient was ingesting 20 g of sorbitol each day, while the man's intake was around 30 g.

The patients modified their chewing habits and within a year had returned to normal intestinal health, the letter adds. The woman gained seven kilograms and the man five kilograms.

"Our cases show that sorbitol consumption can cause not only chronic diarrhoea and functional bowel problems but also considerable unintended weight loss," write the doctors. "Thus, the investigation of unexplained weight loss should include dietary history with regard to foods containing sorbitol."

Don't use the stuff!

I'm now on Metronidazole and it's working!

3 days and normal(ish) BM's!

Leading contender is currently an atypical Giardia infection, possibly complicated by diabetes. Whatever it is, the antibiotics are working.

The nausea and general malaise have gone, no diarrhea and I'm starting to reintroduce foods that previously set me off.

sheesh, that's been a long time to diagnosis, Os.

I bet it's a load off your mind to be on the way back up.

Have you any idea where you could have picked it up?

Ok, I am trying again. My knees have been really complaining of late so time to reduce the load.
I started trying to lose weight 2 weeks ago.

So far I have lost 2 kg but my new jeans must have streached as well. Doing jumping beanz yesterday at Mainly Music my tummy unexpectedly went on view. I need a belt to hold them up.

Oh and as a slightly early 40th birthday present Mum just took me to a hairdresser this morning, my very long straight hair is no more. It has been thinned out, layered and would be just below shoulder length - if it was straight. I have decided to let it be curls.
So that is probably another ¼ to ½ kilo gone.

Good for you Sweetpea. It's not easy to lose weight especially as we get a little older. It took me just over 9 months to lose 20 kgs. I got down to 65.5kgs then put 2kgs back on over Christmas. I'm trying to move those last 2kgs but would ideally like to be 64kgs.

It's no secret that I went to Jenny Craig and although I stopped eating their food some months back, I still follow their basic programme for the most part. I've lost it sowly and the theory is, if it comes off slowly there's a better change of keeping it off.

Not sure what you're like with exercise SP with your knees. I have been unable to exercise so it can be done without!

My knees aren't too bad, just one is a bit painful bending much of the time so I am just at the start of arthritis so all the more reason to reduce the weight it is carrying sooner rather than later.

Mum has decided to help me as hanging round with me is helping her keep on the straight and narrow diet and weight wise as well. Yesterday she suggested that we should meet up once or twice a week for a walk round the park. Today she rang up and said meet me at the shops in 20 minutes, she lives about 1½km up the hill from me. I have just got back from the walk and a flat white. Hellyer's Creek is really quite beautiful on a clear winter morning even when the tide is mostly out.

It makes a huge difference when you have a support person or life style change partner, so it's great for you and your Mum.

My usual food intake per day is as follows:-

BREAKFAST - 1 piece of whole or multi grain toast with peanut butter, cup of tea with trim milk.

MID MORNING SNACK - 2 mandarins or an apple or 2 kiwifruit.

LUNCH - lean ham and salad sandwich on wholegrain or multigrain bread, lettuce salad with carrot, tomato, feta cheese, cashew nuts and beetroot.

MID AFTERNOON SNACK - As fistful of meal mate mini's

DINNER - small piece of steak (no fat) either grilled or pan-fried on spray on oil with generous servings of brussell sprouts (or cabbage, spinach or similar), carrots and one small potato

EVENING SNACK - 2 kiwifruit or an apple or 2 mandarins or a pear

Sometimes for dinner I have a handful of cooked chicken and a large salad. You can eat as much beetroot, carrots, brussel sprouts, asparagus, mushrooms, cabbage, lettuce and tomato as you like.
