Old Fashioned Weather Wisdom

  • Horses run fast before a violent storm, or before windy conditions
  • If autumn leaves are slow to fall, expect a cold winter
  • The sky turns green where there is hail
  • In the evening when cruckets are in the cool grass, count the number of chirps they make in 14 seconds. This will be the temperature in their location (it may be different where you are standing).
  • The coldest time of day is often shortly after sunrise: the sun warms the earth just enough to stir up cold air on the ground.
  • The first frost of autumn will be exactly six months after the first thunderstorm of the spring.
  • In the winter, a heavy snow is predicted if the barometer falls and the temperature rises.
  • If the perfume of flowers is heavy in the air, rain is soon to come.
  • If many earthworms appear, rain is soon to follow.
  • Bluebirds chatter when it's going to rain.
  • It will be a snowy winter if hair on horses is thick early in the fall
