Israeli assault on Hamas kills more than 200

By IBRAHIM BARZAK and AMY TEIBEL, Associated Press Writer

1 hr 9 mins ago

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip ?Israeli warplanes rained more than 100 tons of bombs on security sites in Hamas-ruled Gaza Saturday and early Sunday, killing at least 230 people in one of the Mideast conflict's bloodiest assaults in decades. The government said the open-ended campaign was aimed at stopping rocket attacks that have traumatized southern Israel.

Most of the casualties were security forces, but Palestinian officials said at least 15 civilians were among the dead. More than 400 people were also wounded.

The unprecedented assault sparked protests and condemnations throughout the Arab world, and many of Israel's Western allies urged restraint, though the U.S. blamed Hamas for the fighting.

But there was no end in sight. The first round of strikes began around noon Saturday followed by successive waves of attacks that continued into the early hours Sunday.

Israel warned it might go after Hamas' leaders, and militants kept pelting Israel with rockets ?killing at least one Israeli and wounding six.

Hundreds of Israeli infantry and armored corps troops headed for the Gaza border in preparation for a possible ground invasion, military officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity under army guidelines.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said late Saturday that the goal was "to bring about a fundamental improvement in the security situation." He added, "It could take some time."

The Israeli airstrikes caused widespread panic and confusion, and black plumes of smoke billowed above the territory, ruled by the Islamic militant Hamas for the past 18 months. Some of the Israeli missiles struck in densely populated areas as students were leaving school, and women rushed into the streets frantically looking for their children.

Jeeeeeeeeeeeeez Buick are we gonna go back into all that crap about a Palestian state existing....When there was no Palestinian State before Isarel took it in 1967...When she defeated five Arab Armies amassed on her borders.....Yaawwwwwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnn...Strange when Eygpt owned Gazza Trans Jordan owned the West Bank prior to the 1967 war of attrition....Not one Arab nation was interested in a Palestinian state  Now were they.......Because it just did not exist....never has in the whole history of the Middle East.

Sure. The resolution that created a jewish state did not create an arab one as well.

That was all a misunderstanding.

They should've taken the deal but noooo....it wasn't good enough for Arafart so he got up and walked away from the table. They would have HAD their precious Palestinian statehood by now but Arafart knew better!

They NEVER miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

The Israeli government did indeed withdraw from the Gaza Strip in 2005 ?in order to be able to intensify control of the West Bank. Ariel Sharon's senior adviser, Dov Weisglass, was unequivocal about this, explaining: "The disengagement [from Gaza] is actually formaldehyde. It supplies the amount of formaldehyde that is necessary so that there will not be a political process with the Palestinians... this whole package that is called the Palestinian state has been removed from our agenda indefinitely."
Ordinary Palestinians were horrified by this, and by the fetid corruption of their own Fatah leaders, so they voted for Hamas. It certainly wouldn't have been my choice ?an Islamist party is antithetical to all my convictions - but we have to be honest. It was a free and democratic election, and it was not a rejection of a two-state solution. The most detailed polling of Palestinians, by the University of Maryland, found that 72 per cent want a two-state solution on the 1967 borders, while fewer than 20 per cent want to reclaim the whole of historic Palestine. So, partly in response to this pressure, Hamas offered Israel a long, long ceasefire and a de facto acceptance of two states, if only Israel would return to its legal borders.
Rather than seize this opportunity and test Hamas's sincerity, the Israeli government reacted by punishing the entire civilian population. It announced that it was blockading the Gaza Strip in order to "pressure" its people to reverse the democratic process. The Israelis surrounded the Strip and refused to let anyone or anything out. They let in a small trickle of food, fuel and medicine ?but not enough for survival. Weisglass quipped that the Gazans were being "put on a diet". According to Oxfam, only 137 trucks of food were allowed into Gaza last month to feed 1.5 million people. The United Nations says poverty has reached an "unprecedented level." When I was last in besieged Gaza, I saw hospitals turning away the sick because their machinery and medicine was running out. I met hungry children stumbling around the streets, scavenging for food.
It was in this context ?under a collective punishment designed to topple a democracy ?that some forces within Gaza did something immoral: they fired Qassam rockets indiscriminately at Israeli cities. These rockets have killed 16 Israeli citizens. This is abhorrent: targeting civilians is always murder. But it is hypocritical for the Israeli government to claim now to speak out for the safety of civilians when it has been terrorising civilians as a matter of state policy.

This is, in part, why I think it is imperative for the Israeli's to get someone in there who has a better handle on how to go about things. Who that might be, I'm not quite sure just yet but they surely do need some help at the top in order to set things in motion. If things remain the same as they are presently, we won't be seeing any chance whatsoever for Palestinian statehood again. Now, if that's the game plan then at the very least there should be some official announcement on this position, either that or start to work in another direction leading up to a two state solution.

In other words, shit or get off the pot.

I'd concur with that.  They should at least be honest about their intentions.

          And Livni should stop lying.
