In the main event, a welterweight title will be at stake as rising star Miguel Cotto (31-0, 25 KOs), from Caguas, Puerto Rico, takes on Alfonso Gomez (18-3-2, 8 KOs), from Whittier, Cal., in a scheduled 12-round contest.

I've never liked Cotto..... nothing stands out about him that I feel is exceptional.

Gomez has an unlikely timing and anticipation.   People that followed 'the Challenger' saw Gomez.    He was not given high marks at the beginning but went to the semi finals.   At the semis, he fought a guy that he fought towards the beginning and that opponent said of Gomez - "he gave me the best fight of my life and he gave it to me twice".

good luck to you tonight Alfonso.

this is very interesting.    Boxing trainer Emanuel Steward has trained 'the Hitman' Hearns, Oliver McCall, Lennox Lewis, Zab Judah (I think) and the Klhisko bothers (sp).   Also notably - Prince Naz who is currently serving jail time for hit/run drunk driving resulting in death.     Naz is a super fat head, or was.   Not sure how he's doing in jail.

Emanuel Steward Link ………?

Sometimes, no matter how much success a man has had in life, he gets a yearning to turn back the clock and relive the excitement of his youth. Emanuel Steward, one of the greatest trainers of all time, has made just such a decision, and he has not looked back since.

Last month Steward was on a plane from Detroit to New York when his cell phone rang. It was my request for an interview to discuss his quiet, unannounced decision to stop taking on established boxers and switch to young guns he could mold from the get-go.

Ironically, sitting on the plane next to him was a man named Tommy Hearns, who as an 18-year-old Detroit kid in 1976 walked into Steward's fledgling Kronk gym and helped launch one of the greatest assembly lines for young champions this sport has ever seen.

"Coming here (New York) from Detroit, Tommy and me talked about the fun we used to have back then, as compared to me traveling all over the world," Steward said.

I cant be right all the time.    Alfonso is sometimes a little lacking in his initiative.   However, his aptitude to  respond is phenominal.    That being said, particularly in fighting - the best defense is a good offense.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) -After two lopsided welterweight title fights, it's time for Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito to get it on in the ring.

That likely will happen this summer, and both champions can expect tougher outings than they had Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall.

Cotto battered Alfonso Gomez for five rounds to retain his WBA welterweight title and set up the fight with new IBF champion Margarito. Earlier, Margarito dominated Kermit Cintron for the second time, then knocked him out in the sixth round to win the IBF crown.

this should be an awsome fight.
I believe Pavlik beat Jermaine Taylor about this time last year - by KO.
Pavlik was the super underdog.    on the other hand,  B-Hop has  super with strategy.

THIS SATURDAY NIGHT: Countdown To Pavlik-Hopkins

When a powerful young champion and devastating knock-out artist meets a future Hall of Fame boxing legend and two-division world champion who has never been knocked out, there will be plenty of debate and speculation as to who will win.

and Roy Jones Jr. looses to Joe Calzaghe
I'm sure this match served the boxing fans well.   Its always a pleasure to watch Jones box, even in a loss.
