This will show you how to save your pixels with a transparent background using the gif optimizer in PSP.
I've never done it this way, but it looks about the same as doing it in AS.
 
 When I complete a graphic in PSP, I merge layers, making sure my background is transparent.
Go to file, export, gif optimizer:

I haven't used the wizard in this, it might be worth a try if you are brave.
The individual tabs need to be set up before clicking on OK:

Click on OK, you should be able to save as gif and have a transparent background.
 
You may have to play with some of the settings, depending on your graphic, these are the basics to get you started.
