Arrah Me Mateys,

Only in Texas will you get temperatures to 81 degrees on Monday & then get freeze warning for Tuesday night.

I spent that beautiful day on Monday afternoon finishing up weeding my daylily bed & straighting out my name tags & spraying for bugs & putting fertilizer out (I was feeling ugly so I put beer out for the little slugs/snails so that they could die with happy smiles on their faces).  The bed was looking so pretty.  All I needed was to put the new mulch down to keep the daylilies from baking to death in the Texas sun but I ran out of time so I was supposed to finish up Tuesday.

The wind picked up just after 8pm when a cold front came through.  At 10pm there was a loud bang & the power was gone.  It seems the ash tree lost a limb that came down right across the power lines & pulled our electric power meter right off of our house along with phone lines & cable lines.

The power co told me that it would be around 3am before the power would be restored.  Bob offered to go outside with a flashlight & try to "FIX IT".  I didn't think that was a good idea at all.  Wind whipping around, trees groaning & moaning & whipping all around, & a downed power line just didn't seem like a good sound foundation upon which to work around not to mention the darkness.

The power company didn't make it until 11:33am (only 8 1/2 hours past their deadline).  Then they told us that they couldn't reattach the meter to the house--their responsibility ended at the house.  Which meant no power still to the house.  So at 2pm an electrician was happy to come & reattach the meter to the house for a fee naturally.  The phone company came after the power was restored to redo the lines & restore the internet connection.  (the convenience of our wireless phone means that when the power goes so goes the phone)
The cable lines are still flapping in the strong Texas breezes.

It has been really cold today (temp in the 40's).  Freeze warning out tonight.  Tomorrow Bob & I have to go out & break up the ash tree limbs & get them carted out to the curb for the green grabber to pick up on Thursday.  I'll be re-cleaning the daylily bed that I just had finished cleaning.  It would be that bed that the limbs fell into.  The bed is just filled with twigs & debris from the ash tree.  So I have to clean it before putting the new mulch down.

Life is ever full of surprises.  I am going to be more than ready for Orlando.

Shive me timbers I'm ready to leave.

Jane

Jane... Texas must be having an identity crisis and think it's Virginia...  Our "normal" winter is exactly what you described... 20-30+ temperature swings in a matter of hours... in the past month, we have had days of mid-70's followed by 3 days of low-30's only to bounce back up to upper 60's and now we are looking at a high of 38 again tomorrow.

The poor plants don;t have a clue on what to do -- they start to grow, then try to hiude back in the ground... then another growth spurt... the good news is that the weeds don;t know what to do either so we may actually end up with a green lawn this spring!  lol

Mike-in-VA.

Texas that thinks it's Virginia is certainly messing with everything.  I have 2 iris plants that have already put up bloom stalks (That should not be happening until the end of March).  The freeze tonight is definitely not going to promote that blooming.

If global warming means that the weather is going crazy then it is definitely that.  I won't know until Wed morn how low the temp actually went.  I'm crossing fingers that it just barely stayed above the freezing point.  My daylilies won't like the cold but they will do OK.  My tulips are really enjoying the cold.  For some reason not all of the bulbs came up though & I did prechill the bulbs--I bought them on e-bay so I don't think that I will do that again.  I think that I will stick with the nursery or mail order garden places when I order next year.

Thanks for letting me know that no matter where I go it will always feel like home complete with all problems.

Ahoy All

For real weather changes come to Michigan.  We can have a difference of 40 degrees or more from one day to the next.  Right now we are cold in the single digits with about 4 inches of snow on the ground.  We are suppose to get more snow tonight.  We definately have 4 seasons here and really can't plant our gardens until Memorial Weekend because we still have the chance of frost.  Sometimes we still get frost after memorial weekend but that's when the vegetables get planted for the food garden.  All the trees are still bare here.  I didn't know that Texas or Virignia got that cold.  My son is stationed at Norfolk and him & his wife live in Norfolk.  They are coming from living in the Chicago area and his wife says she missed winter since Virginia was so warm over the winter season.

I'm also counting the days until the convention.  I've even got one suitcase already packed with my pieces for Peter to sign along with some clothing items.  I also have packed some of my own brushes to use for the paint your own session.

I used to live in Michigan... only one thing worse there than the weather... the mosquitos!  I swear they were big enough to carry off small children!

Only in Texas does the idea of a precinct caucus make people believe they can vote twice. jeanne
