Can some one please tell me just how much a peck is?

Apparently a Peck is one quarter of a bushel. A Bushel being a volume not weight measure.
 
For your purposes, a quarter of a peck is 2 quarts (imperial measure).
 
So an empty milk container sounds like the way!

Fire Ball, A peck is 1/4 of a bushel.  Here is the definition of a bushel:
 
"A dry measure, containing 4 pecks, 8 gallons or 32 quarts." 
 
Therefore, a peck would be 2 gallons or 8 quarts (dry measure)
