Donations Needed for Live Donor Liver Transplant
Susan Yellow Horse-Davis My Mother is in need of a Liver Transplant!
NTAF Midwest/West Liver Transplant Fund
Denver, Colorado - Susan Yellow Horse-Davis is the focus of a fundraising campaign to assist her with liver transplant related expenses. I hope that this email will add clarification to many.
Despite being sober for well over 15+ years, Susan does have cirrhosis and not only has been on the transplant list for a number of years but also has been symptomatic and had to have procedures done that are indicative of advancing stages of the disease and indications for a liver transplant. She was already hospitalized almost two years ago for life-threatening bleeding from esophageal varices meaning "varicose" backup of blood flow. It was very frightening because we could have lost her back then!
This concern is frightening to me as well. Somehow, we have to impress upon people through the moccasin telegraph that this is serious and was already serious before the liver cancer diagnosis has passed. This fundraising would have taken place even before that diagnosis - I think it just rallied us into action that was long overdue. An estimated $388,600 is being raised by Denver Native and Non-Native volunteers to assist Susan with uncovered medical and living expenses while recovering from the liver transplant over a 3-month period.
Susan is the daughter of Thomas Yellow Horse and Mary Friday Scares and the sister of Theresa, Gloria, Beverly, Sharon, Helen, Joe, Lucille, Rosemary, and Maria all living in the Denver area. Susan comes from a long line of Oglala Lakota Warriors through her grandparents Joseph Yellow Horse and Susie Patton, and Obed Friday Scares and Susie Pretty Weasel.
Susan is also a mother and a grandmother of 5. She and her husband, Grant Davis (Tlingit) have two children, Tahnee and Thomas. Their grandchildren, Kaia, Nitika, Samuel, Henry, and Lovella also need their "Unci" (grandma) to be healthy and strong.
To help defray some of the transplant expenses, a fundraising campaign has been established in Susan's honor with the National Transplant Assistance fund (NTAF). NTAF is a nonprofit organization that has been assisting the transplant community for over 22 years. All donations are tax-deductible and are administered for transplant expenses only. Donations are graciously accepted.
