Okay, I do not know if anyone ever answered this question, so here is my response.
Golden Dawn is a path that depending on whom you read either came into existence at the end of the 19th Century and was a combination of Jewish Mysticism and Egyptian Mysticism. It is a lodge based system with varrying degrees or levels you must obtain to gain more knowledge and be able to do certain rituals and or ceremonies.
It is very complex it requires among other things learning hebrew to be able to vibrate the tonal qualities of the hebrew god names and words of power, it requires an understanding of numerology, and in order to do Tarot you must understand how the colors represent various aspects, you must know what house a card is assigned to etc.
I said it depended on whom you read there are those who will claim that the GD goes back to pre Christian Era, but most consider this a lodge that rose at the end of the 19th century and came back in the early 20th under the leadership of such people as Israel Regardie and more currently the Cisciroes.
There are various on line communities dedicated to the path of the Golden Dawn.
However I do not recommend this as a beginners path way, it is very technical and you need a very analitical mind to see beyond the symbolism and the layers and layers of material half of which you must be able to fill in the blanks on your own.
And no it is not New age.
Hope this answers your question.
