I have been asked by several to recommend books to learn by. This is a very hard thing for me to do. I really don't read the "new-age" books (nothing really wrong with them except that they don't always explain things truthfully and alot of stuff is just made up or mixed together to suit the beliefs of the author). So on that note read what you will and take what you will from those books. Your best bet is to read histories of the differents nations that are of interest to you. As I try to read on many different nations and beliefs, I basically read traditions and such of the Plains Indians as I am a Plains Indian. You should do the same, follow your own tradition. If you are not sure or are non-ndn, start by reading on different tribes and pick one that speaks to you. All ceremonies and such are different per nation.
I find if you want to know traditions and such, it is good to go for books that explain the history or ceremonies of the different American Indians. I have researched many and have found within many what I am seeking. These usually are older books, some very hard to find. But worth the search.
I would like to recommend an author that I feel is very good. His name is Vine Deloria, Jr.
His books are well worth the read. Although he doesn't mince words so if you are one who is very sensitive, perhaps he isn't the author for you.
Titles to books I have read of his are:
- God is Red
- Red Earth, White Lies
- Custer died for your Sins
- Spirit and Reason
Hope this helps some. I will post more as I come across them in my library.
