Calamus Calamus, or Sweet Flag, is used for gastritis, dyspepsia and gas. Only the North American variety is recommended since Calamus from Europe seems to contain the Carcinogen 'Cis-isoasarone. However, it has been in use for thousands of years in India with no recorded complaints. In India it is also used to rejuvenate the brain and to strengthen memory and concentration. It can be snuffed for nasal congestion and polyps. Warning: In larger amounts Calamus may lead to Intoxication that, at best, compares with a LSD trip and, in a higher dosage, may lead to hours of violent vomiting!! Another Chinese name is Bai Chang. Camphor Camphor is used as an inhalant to improve respiration, and in small amounts is may be used to improve circulation and to fight inflammations. However, in larger amounts it may act as an irritant and Camphor should not be used during pregnancies. Moreover in children, who ingested Camphor, it has led to serious side-effects, and seizures. In rare cases, children have even died from these side- effects. Camphor is included in many ointments useful to bring relief to sufferers from rheumatism and arthritis. Canker Root Canker Root is useful for canker sores, sore throat, dyspepsia and gastritis. The roots are also good for ulcerations and inflammations of mucous membranes in the mouth. Cannabis Cannabis may help to make debilitating diseases bearable. It is used to counteract nausea as a result of chemotherapy and other nausea producing pharmaceutical chemicals. Many MS sufferers have reported a dramatic improvement and reduction of their symptoms. Cannabis can be an aid in psychotherapy and for withdrawal. The Chinese use mainly the Cannabis seeds to strengthen and lubricate the intestines and for constipation. According to newer research published in 1999, Cannabis seeds have the best balance in essential fatty acids. Warning: Cannabis contains Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which is a hallucinogenic. Caraway Caraway got its name from the effect it has on all kinds of stomach and intestinal trouble. Like Anise and Fennel it is bringing relief for problems with gas including disturbing cramps caused by gas. Since they are relative harmless they have been used to relief cramps even, and especially, in infants. Caraway has some antiseptic properties and contains the B-group as well as Calcium and Potassium. Cardamom Cardamom helps digestion, the stomach and eliminates gas. In India it is used as an antidote for too much caffeine and as an aid in meditation. It reduces Kapha and improves the flow of Prana. USES: Appetizer, carminative, diaphoretic, expectorant, stimulant, stomachic. DOSAGE: 100 to 500 mg of ground seeds 3 times a day with a glass of water.
Carrot Carrots are known for their cancer preventing Carotene but are also a good source of Potassium, another cancer preventing substance. One of its oils is effective against roundworms. Carotene is also useful to rebuild protective membranes and to improve eye-sight especially at night. USES: Anthelmintic, carminative, diuretic, stimulant. Cascara Sagrada Cascara Sagrada is an excellent tonic for the intestines. It effects the liver, gallbladder and the intestines. Because it increases the secretions of the pancreas, the stomach and gallbladder Cascara is used to counter indigestion. Cascara also effects the peristaltic action of the intestinal canal and is therefore a herb of choice for constipation. USES: Purgative, tonic. Castor Bean Castor bean's main use is to fight stubborn constipation. Even so the oil is extracted from the seeds, the seeds themselves are poisonous. USES: Analgesic, antirheumatic, cathartic, laxative. A.K.A.: Bofareira DOSAGE: 1 to 2 tablespoons of oil.
Catnip Catnip contains Vit. A, C, B-group, Magnesium, Manganese, Phosphorus, Sodium and Sulphur. Catnip' s main use is for calming the nerves without any known side-effects and dependencies. Cats Foot Cats Foot increases the secretions of the gallbladder, the stomach and the pancreas. It is also used to raise the blood pressure. USES: Cholagogue A.K.A.: Mountain everlasting DOSAGE: Half a teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 2 to 3 times a day.
Cayenne Pepper Cayenne Pepper is another one of the most basic herbal tools. It has a positive effect on circulation, the heart, any kind of bleeding and is therefore of excellent use in the prevention of brain strokes. Even so it is a very hot spice it is also used to heal stomach and other intestinal ulcers. Warning: In Mexico, overuse of Cayenne Pepper has been associated with an increase in stomach cancer. It can also aggravate inflammations. USES: Anthelmintic, appetizer, digestive, hemostatic, irritant, sialogogue, stimulant, tonic. A.K.A.: Chili Pepper, Red Pepper DOSAGE: Capsules: see description. Celandine Celandine calms the stomach and the inflamed gallbladder and bilary duct. It is also useful for hepatitis, jaundice, and cirrhosis (for cirrhosis use in combination with Milk Thistle). The fresh juice mixed with vinegar is an old Folk remedy for warts. However, care should be taken to use it only on warts, because the fresh juice can also produce serious side-effects and lead to congestion of lungs and liver when taken internally. Celandine is NOT RECOMMENDED for prolonged usage. USES: Anodyne, antispasmodic, caustic, diaphoretic, diuretic, hydragogue, narcotic, purgative. Celery Celery seeds and stems have been used to neutralize not only excessive acid in the stomach but also uric acid. It promotes the flow of urine and is used to stimulate the kidneys. It is also used to promote menstruation and should therefore not be used during pregnancy. Celery contains Vit. A, B-group, C, Calcium, Potassium, Magnesium, Silicon, Phosphorus, Sodium, Iron and Sulphur. The seeds have Carminative and Sedative properties. USES: Seeds: Carminative, sedative. Centaury Centaury belongs to the group of herbs that have a general tonic and stimulating effect on the whole digestive system. It is a classical remedy used for strengthening the gallbladder, the digestive system, the stomach, ulcers, liver, generative organs and the blood. It is also said to promote menstruation. USES: Appetizer, cholagogue, diaphoretic, digestive, emetic, fever, tonic. A.K.A.: European Centaury DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 1 to 3 times daily half of an hour before meals.
Chaga Chaga is a good tonic, kills minor pain and is used for gastritis, ulcers, TB, and certain cancers. Chaga may be useful for rejuvenation purposes. Do not confuse with Ganoderma found on poplars. USES: Anodyne, purifying, restorative. A.K.A.: Birch mushroom DOSAGE: Use one part to five parts of cold water or alcohol; let sit over night; 3 tablespoons of solution before eating 3 to 6 times a day.
Chamomile, German Chamomile is mainly used for gastritis. It contains Cumarins and is useful for all inflammations of the internal membranes. For some people Chamomile is not the right choice, it may even further aggravate the stomach. For stomach problems one usually takes peppermint tea if there is too little stomach acid. If there is too much, Chamomile is suggested. Some people may also be slightly allergic to Chamomile. Also see Chamomile, Roman with similar properties. Chaparral Chaparral is a very potent herbal antibiotic. This plant had been in use by the Natives for all kinds of tumors and cancers. Chaparral is used for arthritis, acne, kidney infections, certain backaches, leukemia, tumors, prostatitis, prostate-, skin-, lung- and stomach cancer, bronchitis and pneumonia. It fights infections anywhere in the body and is said to strengthen the eyes. Chaparral can be taken in capsules or one can add one spoonful of the herb to 1/2 liter of boiling water, cover it and led it sit over night. Then take a glass before every meal. Chastetree Chastetree should not be confused with Vitex negundo heterophylla. Both are commonly called Vitex. Chastetree regulates menstrual bleeding and frequency. Chickweed Chickweed strengthens the stomach and the intestines. It soothes the membranes and is used for arteriosclerosis. Mixed with Spirulina it can also be used as an appetite depressant. Chinese Agrimony Chinese Agrimony is a strong Antibiotic useful against many parasites including: Malaria plasmodia, schistosomomas, taenia, and vaginal trichomonas. The active constituent Agrimophol has been found to be 95% effective against Taenia. Xian He Cao is the Chinese name for Agrimonia eupatoria which is related to Chinese Agrimony.
Chinese Cucumber Chinese Cucumber is an annual and also known as Chinese snake gourd, tien hua fen and gua lou. This plant is still undergoing tests for its alleged ability to effect the AIDS virus. Next to its promise for killing infected HIV cells with the compound GLQ223, extracted from the roots, Chinese Cucumber is also used to treat angina pectoris, to induce abortions and as an expectorant. Clover, Red Red Clover contains the enzyme Genisteine which is very important in the treatment of cancer. It supports treatment with other herbs used for liver, gallbladder, and digestive complaints. Cockscomb Cockscomb stops bleeding and diarrhea. It is said to improve vision.
Codonopsis Codonopsis is a general tonic and a specific tonic for lungs, spleen and the stomach. It has been found to increase red blood cell and hemoglobin count. Codonopsis is very useful for anemia, fatigue, dyspepsia and diabetes. USES: Stomachic, tonic DOSAGE: 3 grams 3 to 6 times daily.
Coffee Coffee, as a stimulant, is used for drowsiness. It is also used in enemas to detoxify and stimulate the liver and after a brain stroke to speed recovery. USES: Stimulant
Colombo Colombo reduces fever, acts as a tonic and may stop vomiting and nausea. It is also used for stomach and other intestinal complaints. USES: Anti-emetic, fever, tonic. A.K.A.: Kalumb DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; Sip from 1 to 2 cups throughout the day.
Coltsfoot Coltsfoot is one of the best cough suppressants. It works on the brain's cough center but also on throat and lungs. Coltsfoot is an effective expectorant, disinfectant, anti-inflammatory and soothes the membranes. It is mainly used for all coughs and lung problems. Chinese also use the flowers with antitussive, expectorant and anti- asthmatic properties. USES: Astringent, demulcent, emollient, expectorant. A.K.A.: Butterbur, Coughwort, Horsefoot, Horsehoof, Bullsfoot. DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 3 to 12 times a day.
Comfrey Comfrey's German name Beinwell comes from its known healing effect on broken bones. Comfrey has been extensively used for that purpose in Russia. Comfrey has a high content of Allantoin which is known to speed up healing of any wounds. Following Spirulina it also has the second highest amount of Vit. B12 and like Spirulina contains all essential amino-acids. Note: Some warnings have been put in circulation about any long term use. There are claims that its pyrrolizidine content may have caused liver damage, which is, however, disputed by other experts. USES: Anodyne, astringent, demulcent, emollient, expectorant, hemostatic, refrigerant, vulnerary. A.K.A.: Blackwort, Bruisewort, Knitback, Slippery root, Healing herb. DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 3 to 12 times daily.
Common Mallow Common Mallow soothes membranes. Use for cough, stomach and intestinal problems. USES: Astringent, demulcent, emollient, expectorant. A.K.A.: Mallow (high, country) DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon drink with 1 glass of water (do not boil).
Coral Root Coral Root (Crawley) works as a diaphoretic and sedative. It is effective for fever, cramps and various skin diseases. USES: Diaphoretic, fever, sedative. A.K.A.: Chickentoes, Turkey claw, Dragon's claw, Fever root, Crawley DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon with 1 glass of water; Twice daily.
Coriander Coriander, like most spices, assists digestive processes. Externally, Coriander has been used for rheumatism. USES: Antispasmodic, appetizer, aromatic, carminative, stomachic. DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 3 times daily.
Corn Corn has a good amount of iron, potassium, and zinc. The Corn silk is used for cystitis, oliguria, pyelitis, and other urinary problems. It has diuretic properties. USES: Demulcent, diuretic. A.K.A.: Indian corn, Maize DOSAGE: Corn silk: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 3 times daily.
Cornflower Cornflower's main use is for nervous disorders and dyspepsia. Natives have used it as an antidote for bites from snakes and insects, a practice, which I don't necessarily recommend. Flowers have been used for eyedrops. USES: Diuretic, tonic. A.K.A.: Backelors button, Bluebonnet
Corn silk Corn silk is used for urinary problems (bladder, urethra, kidneys) including cystitis. Because of its diuretic properties it has also been found useful for high blood pressure. USES: Demulcent, diuretic. DOSAGE: Corn silk: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 3 times daily.
Corydalis Corydalis contains an alkaloid that works on the nervous system and has been used in formulas designed for Parkinson's. It is an antispasmodic and hypnotic. Its antispasmodic properties are used for palsy, trembling hands, Parkinson's and other complaints of the nervous system. USES: Antispasmodic, hypnotic. Early fumitory. DOSAGE: NOT RECOMMENDED.
Cotton Cotton has been found to contain antiviral and anti-parasitic properties. It is studied as a male anti-fertility drug. Seeds have been used for coughs. USES: Roots: Abortifacient, emmenagogue, and oxytocic. Seeds: Mucilaginous DOSAGE: NOT RECOMMENDED.
Couchgrass Couch Grass, or Quack Grass, has antibiotic properties. The roots are useful for all urinary infections including bladder (cystitis) and kidney problems. It soothes the membranes and is a good tonic for the intestines. The wide use for Quack grass includes: Dropsy, cystitis, pyelitis, gonorrhea, problems with liver, gallbladder, stomach, spleen, bladder, gout, rheumatism, diarrhea, colds. USES: Aperient, demulcent, diuretic, emollient, tonic. A.K.A.: Witch grass, Quack grass. DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 3 times daily.
Cowslip Cowslip is a tonic for the nerves and the brain. It is a Sedative, Expectorant and Antispasmodic. Cowslip is useful for cramps, convulsions, epilepsy, trembling and palsy. Make sure plant is dried before used, the juice of the fresh plant has irritant properties. Not the same as Primula officinalis. USES: Anodyne, antispasmodic, diaphoretic, diuretic, expectorant, rubefacient. A.K.A.: Marsh marigold, Water dragon.
Cramp Bark Cramp bark, as the name implies, is useful for all kinds of cramps, convulsions and spasms of any part of the body and the nerves. USES: Antispasmodic, astringent, diuretic, nervine, tonic A.K.A.: High Cranberry, Squaw Bush. DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 2 to 3 times daily.
Cranberry Cranberry is known for its powerful effect on all urinary infections. Cranberry will increase acid content of stomach and urine. It should therefore not be taken together with Bearberry in the treatment of urinary complaints since Bearberry works best when the urine is more alkaline. DOSAGE: Small glass of juice 1 to 3 times daily.
Crawley Coral Root (Crawley) works as a diaphoretic and sedative. It is effective for fever, cramps and various skin diseases. Crawley is one of the best diaphoretics. See Corel Root.
