Agave
Agave has some useful antiseptic properties. It checks bacterial
growth in the stomach, intestines and the urinary tract. There are
some reports for treating syphilis and tuberculosis.
USES: Antiseptic, diuretic, laxative
A.K.A.: Flowering or Spiked Aloe
DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of water; morning, noon and evening.

Agrimony
The herb is good specifically for the stomach, liver and kidneys.
Agrimony tea has been used as a gargle for inflammations of mouth and
throat. Other uses include problems with the spleen and the
gallbladder.
USES: Astringent, diuretic, tonic, vulnerary
A.K.A.: Sticklewort
DOSAGE: 3 teaspoons 1 cup of water; morning, noon, evening.

Alfalfa
Alfalfa contains many vitamins, minerals, enzymes and trace minerals
and is therefore useful for vitamin/mineral deficiency. It is a
general tonic and may be used to support healing for the whole
system. Alfalfa is recommended for peptic ulcers, as a blood
purifier, anemia and fatigue. Alfalfa nourishes the pituitary gland.
USES: Alternative, diuretic, tonic
A.K.A.: Buffalo herb
DOSAGE: 300 mg of infusion or powder three times a day.

All-heal, Self-heal
All-heal is used for wounds, sore throat, pharyngitis, stomatitis,
thrush, bleeding, worms, diarrhea, fits and convulsions. It has been
used for Liver and Gallbladder problem and also for swollen lymph
glands, goiter, and some cancers and tumors. According to Chinese
medicine, All-heal should not be taken by anyone with a weak stomach
or spleen.
USES: Anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, antispasmodic, astringent,
diuretic, styptic, tonic, vermifuge, vulnerary
A.K.A.: Woundwort
DOSAGE: 1 tablespoon for 1/2 liter of hot water or soak in alcohol.
One cup of tea three times daily or one to two tablespoons of
alcohol.

Allspice
Allspice is used mainly for flatulence.
USES: Aromatic, carminative, stimulant.
A.K.A.: Pimento, Clove pepper

Almond
Almond nuts may be used to regain strength and as brain food. Almonds
contain lots of vitamin E. However; 50 to 60 nuts can apparently be
deadly especially if the nuts have a bitter taste.
USES: Demulcent
A.K.A.: Greek nuts
DOSAGE: 3 nuts three times daily.

Aloe
Aloe Vera's gel is an effective first aid for burns caused by fire,
cold, sun or radiation. It contains substances that are antibiotic
and speed healing of wounds. Aloe is used for ulcers and as a local
anesthetic.
USES: Alternative, emmenagogue, emollient, tonic, rejuvenative,
purgative, vulnerary
DOSAGE: 200 to 500 mg of fresh gel two to three times daily. On
burns renew as soon as it has dried up.

Alpine Cranberry
Alpine Cranberry leaves are used for urinary infections. The berries
contain a good amount of vitamin C and provitamin A and may be used
for diarrhea.
USES: Leaves: Astringent, antiseptic, diuretic. Berries: Astringent,
refrigerant.
A.K.A.: Cowberry, Red bilberry
DOSAGE: 1 tablespoon for one cup of boiling water.

Alum Root
Alum Root is known for its astringent and styptic properties. Alum
stops bleedings and the root was also used for diarrhea and
dysentery. In combination with Unicorn root it was used by Indians to
counter low blood pressure.
USES: Astringent, styptic
A.K.A.: Spotted Cranesbill, Geranium
DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for one cup of boiling water. One cup in the
morning, one cup in the evening.

American Hellebore
Hellebore is one of the best expectorants and therefore useful for
coughs. It is also an emetic and sedative. Hellebore has been used to
treat certain cancers, scrofula and consumption. Hellebore contains
protoveratrine and nervine, both act on the heart by slowing the
pulse and the vasomotor-motor center. Caution: large amount can be
deadly!!
USES: Diaphoretic, emetic, expectorant, fever, narcotic.
A.K.A.: Devil's bite, Green Hellebore, White Hellebore, Bugbane.
DOSAGE: Use NOT RECOMMENDED

American Ivy
American Ivy may be used as part of a cough formula. The bark is
usually collected after the berries have ripened.
USES: Alternative, astringent, expectorant, tonic.
A.K.A.: False grapes, Five leaves, American woodbine
DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for one cup of boiling water daily.

American Mandrake
American Mandrake, also called May Apple, is used for liver problems
and cancer. It stimulates the glands but should only be taken in
small amounts. Large amounts may lead to diarrhea and debility; an
overdose may be fatal. In the past it has been used for mercury
poisoning and sterility. The American Mandrake is not related to the
European Mandrake. It is only poisonous in larger amounts. Still,
usage is NOT RECOMMENDED.
USES: Cathartic, purgative
A.K.A.: May apple, Wild mandrake, Indian apple.
DOSAGE: NOT RECOMMENDED;

Angelica
Angelica is a good tonic and used for all kinds of digestive
problems, including colic, vomiting and ulcers. Chinese Angelica (see
Dong Quai for Chinese Angelica) is one of the main tonics for women,
however, pregnant women and diabetics should avoid it. It is known to
increase the blood's sugar level. The root of Du huo is used by the
Chinese as an antibiotic, analgesic, sedative, antirheumatic, anti-
inflammatory, and antihypertensive.
USES: Appetizer, carminative, expectorant, rejuvenative, stimulant,
stomachic, tonic.
A.K.A.: European Angelica
DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon per cup of boiling water. 2 cups daily.

Anise
Anise is an excellent remedy for problems with gas including colic
caused by gas. Anise contains essential vitamins, minerals and
estrogen. Probably because of its estrogen content, it is known to
vitalize all glands and organs in the body. As an effective
expectorant it has its value in problems with cough, bronchitis and
mucus obstruction.
USES: Antispasmodic, aromatic, carminative, digestive, expectorant,
stimulant, stomachic, tonic.
DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon of seeds per cup of boiling water. 2 - 3 times
daily.

Apple, wild
Wild apple can be used for diarrhea and gastro-enteritis. Like all
apples, Wild apple contains pectin a digestive enzyme and Quercetin
which is of value in all cases of cancer where estrogen is suspected
to be the cause. Quercetin has the following properties: Anti-
inflammatory, Antiallergenic, Antimicrobial, Antimutagenic,
Anticarcinogenic, and Antithrombotic.
USES: Astringent
A.K.A.: Wild apple
DOSAGE: 1 to 6 apples a day.

Apricot
Apricot is strong in Carotene and Potassium. Both are useful in the
fight and prevention of cancer. The pit contains B17, called
Laetrile, which is particularly useful for the treatment of cancer.
Warning: Eating too many pits might induce poisoning since pits also
contain Prussic-acid (some people dispute this risk). Chinese use the
seeds also for coughs and bronchitis.
DOSAGE: 3 - 5 grams a day.

Arnica
Warning: High dosages for internal use have lead to cardiac arrest!!
Arnica is important for topical application and homeopathy. It is
used to disinfect and speed healing of wounds. Internally, Arnica has
been used to stimulate circulation and is useful after a stroke
(brain). In tests American Arnica has shown to have the same actions
as the European Arnica. Arnica contains: Inulin, Lutein, Luteoin, and
Zeaxanthin.
USES: Diaphoretic, diuretic, emollient, expectorant, stimulant,
vulnerary.
A.K.A.: Mountain tobacco, wolfsbane
DOSAGE: Half of a flat, small teaspoon for one cup of boiling water.
Drink one half of a cup three times daily. Start with smaller amounts
to test the strength of the plant. This plant should not be used
internally by someone who has no prior experience with the plant.

Artichoke
Artichoke is a diuretic and stimulates the flow of bile. It is very
helpful for arteriosclerosis, jaundice, liver problems, dyspepsia and
albuminuria.
USES: Cholagogue, diuretic
A.K.A.: Garden / Globe Artichoke
DOSAGE: 3 flower heads; 1 to 3 tablespoons for 1 to 3 cups of water;
three times daily.

Arum
Arum has diaphoretic and expectorant properties. It is useful for
asthma, bronchitis, coughs and flatulence. May be used as part of a
cough formula. As ointment Arum is useful for treating ringworm.
Roots and leaves are poisonous when eaten fresh.
USES: Diaphoretic, expectorant
A.K.A.: Dragon root
DOSAGE: Small teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; twice daily

Asparagus
Asparagus is very beneficial for the kidneys, for gout and
rheumatism. Newer claims say that it is also useful for prevention of
cancer. It is also a good source of fiber. Asparagus contains
Carotene, Vit. C and Selenium. All are known Antioxidants. The
powdered seeds are used for nausea and upset stomach. See "Asparagus,
wild�?which is an important Chinese tonic.
USES: Aperient, aphrodisiac, diaphoretic, diuretic.
A.K.A.: Sparrow grass
DOSAGE: Mostly eaten, 4 to 8 shoots at a time.

Asparagus, wild
Asparagus root strengthens the heart, lungs, kidneys and the brain.
It is good for memory and for the nervous system.
USES: Antibacterial, anticancer, anthelmintic, antipyretic,
antioxytocic, cardiac, diuretic, galactagogue, relaxant.
A.K.A.: Wild Asparagus
DOSAGE: Eat one to two raw roots daily.

Astragalus
Astragalus is an important strengthener of the immune-system. It is
also a tonic for the heart, the spleen, circulation, kidneys, liver,
endocrine system and lowers blood sugar and blood pressure.
Astragalus reduces the "T-suppressor cells" and is a tonic for the
adrenal system. Chinese use it as a strong Qi tonic. See Chinese
Milkvetch
USES: Antibacterial, diuretic, tonic
A.K.A.: Chinese Milkvetch
DOSAGE: 3 x 1 up to 3 x 10 grams and even more.

Balm (Melissa)
Balm, also called Lemon Balm and Melissa, is used to strengthen heart
and nerves. The herb is listed as Stomachic, Carminative,
Diaphoretic, Sedative, and Antispasmodic.
USES: Antispasmodic, calmative, carminative, diaphoretic,
emmenagogue, nervine, sedative, stomachic.
A.K.A.: Lemon Balm, Melissa, Sweet Balm
DOSAGE: 1 to 2 teaspoons for 1 cup of boiling water; 3 times daily
or more if desired.

Banana
Bananas are rich in potassium and fiber. They also contain some
vitamin C and the hormones noradrenalin and serotonin, Dopa,
Tryptophan, Quercetin, and Dopamine. Because of its content of Dopa
Bananas are slightly antiparkinson in action. Dopamine itself cannot
be used because of the blood/brain barrier. Bananas are recommended
to help normalize the intestinal tract in cases of diarrhea as well
as constipation. As a remedy for hemorrhoids, Chinese sources suggest
to steam two bananas and eat these with the peel.
USES: Aperient, demulcent, antiparkinson.
DOSAGE: 1 to 2 bananas daily.

Barberry
Barberry is an effective tonic for the stomach, liver, gallbladder
and spleen. In Ayurvedic medicine, Barberry is used to detoxify the
body. When combined with Turmeric, it is said to remove fat. Barberry
reduces Pitta. Ou Xiao Bo is another Chinese name used for Barberry.
USES: Roots: alternative, antiseptic, bactericidal, hepatic,
laxative, cholagogue, and stimulant. Berries: laxative, refrigerant.
A.K.A.: Jaundice berry, European barberry, Pepperidge.
DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 3 times daily.

Barley
Barley contains Hordenin which, like Ephedrin, stimulates peripheric
circulation and works as a Broncholyticum. It also contains Amino-
phenol. Barley may be used to strengthen the whole system. Barley,
when cooked, soothes the stomach and the intestines. Chinese use the
sprouts for many abdominal complaints.
USES: Seeds: Demulcent (when cooked) Sprouts, raw: Carminative.
A.K.A.: Scotch barley, Pearl barley ( when hulled)
DOSAGE: 2 to 4 tablespoons cooked.

Bearberry
Bearberry is one of the classical remedies for all kinds of urinary
infections including cystitis, nephritis, urethritis etc. It helps to
reduce blood sugar and is useful in combination for diabetes. Other
uses are to strengthen the spleen and to reduce uric acid. Normal use
of Bearberry is completely harmless but overuse can lead to stomach
pain and other side-effects!
USES: Astringent, diuretic, tonic
A.K.A.: Kinnikinnik
DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 2 to 3 times daily.

Bears Garlic
Bear's Garlic is useful for intestinal, lung, and liver problems. It
is used for arteriosclerosis, bronchitis, emphysema and pinworms. It
has similar properties and uses as the cultivated Garlic.
USES: Astringent, expectorant, vermifuge.
A.K.A.: Ramsons
DOSAGE: Use fresh as food like cultivated Garlic.

Bearsfoot
Bear's Foot has a reputation to cure inflammation of the breast. It
is also used for rheumatism and enlarged cervical nodules.
A.K.A.: Leafcup, Balsam resin, Yellow leafcup, Uvedalia.
DOSAGE: A third of a teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 3 to 5
times daily. Bedstraw
Bedstraw is used for a number of complaints. It has a positive
influence on the kidneys, stomach, liver, pancreas, spleen and
glands. It is also recommended for a number of nerve problems. The
fresh juice is used for many skin problems. Yellow Bedstraw has
similar properties and was used for epilepsy and dropsy.
USES: Antispasmodic, diaphoretic, diuretic, vulnerary.
A.K.A.: Cleavers, Goose grass, Cleaverwort.
DOSAGE: 1 tablespoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 3 to 6 times daily.

Bennet
Bennet stops bleeding and is useful for problems with the membranes,
diarrhea, and chronic bronchial catarrh. It is also used for
halitosis and as a general tonic.
USES: Astringent, styptic, tonic
A.K.A.: Yellow avens, European avens.
DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water.

Betony
Betony is an expectorant and useful for coughs, bronchitis and
asthma. As an anthelmintic it is good for worms. Betony is also used
for neurasthenia, bladder and kidney problems. Some have used it for
varicose veins. Also see Wood Betony a close relative. There are five
species growing in the States alone.
USES: Anthelmintic, astringent, carminative, diuretic, expectorant,
vulnerary.
A.K.A.: Lousewort, Wood betony
DOSAGE: 1 to 2 teaspoons for 1 cup of water; 3 times daily.

Bilberry
Bilberry (Huckleberry) stops diarrhea, is useful for inflammation of
the tongue, and to improve eye-sight. In combination with Sumach,
Bilberry berries have been used by the Indians for diabetes. The
leaves are also used for coughs, vomiting, cramps and enteritis.
However, the leaves should only be taken for a limited time since
they may be slightly poisonous when used often.
USES: Antiseptic, antioxidant, astringent.
A.K.A.: Huckleberry, blueberry, Whortleberry, Hurtleberry, Wineberry.
DOSAGE: Berries:3 tablespoons of berries 3 to 6 times daily. Leaves:
Half a teaspoon with 1 glass of water; 2 to 3 times daily

Birch
The young Birch leaves, collected in spring, have been used for
urinary problems and rheumatism. Tea made from the leaves is said to
dissolve gravel and kidney stones. Fresh pressed juice has been used
for baldness and skin diseases.
USES: Astringent, diuretic, diaphoretic.
A.K.A.: White birch, Paper birch
DOSAGE: 1 tablespoon for 1 cup of boiling water 3 to 6 times daily.

Birth Root
Birth Root, as the name implies, is of special use to ease delivery.
Birth root has also been used for diarrhea, coughs, bronchitis, and
other lung problems. All astringent herbs help stop bleedings.
USES: Antiseptic, astringent, diaphoretic, emmenagogue, expectorant,
pectoral, tonic.
A.K.A.: Bethroot, Ground lily, Three-leafed nightshade
DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; two to three times
daily.

Birthwort
Birthwort has been used for snakebite, to promote uterine
contractions, and menstrual problems. Warning: Like Arnica, Birthwort
is now only used externally. At one time it has been used for uterine
contractions during childbirth but it does contain a poisonous
substance. NOT RECOMMENDED for self-administration.
USES: Diaphoretic, emmenagogue, fever, oxytocic, stimulant.
DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water 2 to 3 times daily.

Bitter Orange tree
Flowers can be used as a nervine. Powder of the rind is used for
dyspepsia and flatulence.
USES: Carminative, stimulant, stomachic, tonic.
A.K.A.: Seville orange
DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon of dried flowers or rind.

Black Alder
Black Alder bark is an excellent tonic. The bark has to be dried
because fresh bark will cause vomiting. It is used for jaundice,
gangrene, dropsy, dyspepsia, and as a gargle for sore throat and
pharyngitis..
USES: Astringent, bitter, emetic, hemostatic.
A.K.A.: European Alder
DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 1 to 3 times daily.

Black Cohosh
Black Cohosh has a broad effect on many ailments effecting the whole
body. It strengthens the central nervous system and is therefore good
for any kind of nervous disorder. Any kind of lung disease has been
treated including bronchitis, tuberculosis, whooping cough and
asthma. Black Cohosh contains Estrogen and is a herb of first choice
for all female disorders like uterine problems, menstrual problems,
menopause, hot flashes and cramps. Black Cohosh has also been used
for epilepsy, high blood pressure, liver- and kidney problems.
USES: Antispasmodic, astringent, diuretic, emmenagogue, expectorant,
sedative.
A.K.A.: Cimicifuga, Chinese cohosh
DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; three times daily. Or,
if a stronger dose is required: 1 gram 3 times daily

Black Current
Black Current works as diaphoretic and diuretic. This herb is good
for the kidneys, gout, rheumatism and arteriosclerosis.
USES: Diaphoretic, diuretic
A.K.A.: Quinsy berry
DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 3 to 6 times daily.

Black Elder
Black Elder flowers are an excellent Diaphoretic and Antispastic. It
has been used for pharyngitis, angina, and stomatitis. The flowers
contain Rutin and Quercetin. Quercetin is useful for allergies. Rutin
strengthens the capillaries and vessels. The fruit contains vitamin
C. Bark and root can only be used when fresh.
USES: Bark and root: Diuretic, emetic, purgative Leaves and shoots:
Diuretic. Flowers: Diaphoretic Fruit: Aperient
A.K.A.: European Elder, German Elder.
DOSAGE: 1 tablespoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 3 times daily.

Black Root
Culver's root finds its use as a tonic for the stomach, the duodenum
and the liver. It is used for constipation, to increase the flow of
bile and for hepatitis. High dosage will induce vomiting!!
USES: Alternative, antiseptic, cathartic, cholagogue, emetic,
hepatic, tonic.
A.K.A.: Culver’s root
DOSAGE: A third of a teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 3 times
daily.

Black Walnut
Black Walnut kills many parasites, contains iodine, many minerals and
the oxygen supplying vitamin B15. Curiously, literature lists Black
Walnut as an effective remedy for electrical shock. Its Iodine
content makes it valuable for the Thyroid and as an Antiseptic.
Tincture of the green Walnut hulls are used to kill the flatworm in
Hulda Clark's Cancer treatment. Poultice is recommended for ringworm.
USES: Anthelmintic, astringent.
DOSAGE:30 drops of tincture 3 x daily.

Blackberry
Blackberry is helpful in problems with the digestive system,
including upset stomach, bleeding, nausea, enteritis, diarrhea,
leucorrhea and even appendicitis. Blackberry leaves are excellent for
chronic appendicitis. As long as no surgery is needed, Blackberry
leaves may ease the inflammation.
USES: anti-inflammatory, stomachic.
A.K.A.: Bramble
DOSAGE: 1 tablespoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 3 x daily.

Blackthorn
Blackthorn flowers contain Amygdalin. The flowers are diuretic. The
fruit is used as a tonic for the stomach and the bladder.
USES: Aperient, astringent, diaphoretic, diuretic, stomachic.
A.K.A.: Wild plum
DOSAGE:1 to 2 teaspoons for 1 cup of boiling water; 3 to 5 times
daily.

Bladderwrack
Bladderwrack (Kelp) is especially useful for strengthening the
underactive thyroid (hypothyroid). It contains so many minerals and
vitamins that it is an excellent tonic for the whole body.
Bladderwrack is also recommended for the adrenal glands, the vessels,
the intestines, scrofula, fingernails and the gallbladder.
USES: Alternative, nutritious.
A.K.A.: Sea-Wrack, Kelp-Ware
DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon twice a day.

Blessed Thistle
Blessed Thistle contains manganese and potassium which are known to
have some effect on cancer. This plant improves circulation and is a
general tonic for the whole body including the brain. There are no
known negative side-effects
USES: Diaphoretic, diuretic, emetic, tonic.
A.K.A.: St. Benedict Thistle, Holy thistle, Spotted thistle
DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; three times a day.

Blind Nettle
Blind Nettle stops bleeding, and may be used as an antispasmodic and
expectorant. It is useful for stomach complaints, leucorrhea,
irregular menstruation, uterine cramps and intestinal complaints.
USES: Antispasmodic, astringent, expectorant, styptic.
DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 6 to 10 times daily.

Blood Root
Blood Root can be used as an emetic. Otherwise it is useful for
cough, bronchitis, laryngitis, lung problems, jaundice and intestinal
complaints. Overdose can be deadly! However, I have tried it in tiny
amounts with no problems.
USES: Diuretic, emetic, emmenagogue, expectorant, fever, sedative,
stimulant, tonic.
A.K.A.: Sanguinaria, Red root, Indian paint.
DOSAGE: NOT RECOMMENDED!

Blue Cohosh
Blue Cohosh contains vitamin E, the B-group, calcium, magnesium,
phosphorus, potassium and other vitamins and minerals. It is used to
regulate menstruation, chronic uterine problems, cramps, spasms and
epilepsy. Its use for epilepsy probably stems from its antispasmodic
properties. Contact with the fresh plant has caused dermatitis.
Berries are poisonous.
USES: Anthelmintic, diaphoretic, diuretic, emmenagogue, oxytocic.
A.K.A.: Squaw root
DOSAGE: 10 drops of tincture; 2 to 4 capsules.

Blue Pimpernel
Blue Pimpernel has the same properties as Red Pimpernel. See under
Pimpernel (red). Used for depression, melancholy, and other mental
problems.

Blue Vervain
Blue Vervain is an expectorant and a good tonic for the lungs, the
intestines and the nerves. It is a good tranquilizer. It counters
spasms and expels worms. It contains some Vit. E and C; also Calcium

Boldo Tree
Boldo tree leaves are used for urinary inflammation, sluggish liver,
gallbladder problems, rheumatism, and gonorrhea.
USES: Diuretic, sedative, stomachic.
DOSAGE: No recommendations

Boneset
Boneset is a classical remedy for all colds and fevers. It contains
some Vit. C, Calcium, Paba, Magnesium and Potassium next to the
unknown effective ingredients.
USES: Aperient, cathartic, diaphoretic, emetic, fever, tonic.
A.K.A.: Eupatorium, Indian sage, Sweating plant, Wood boneset.
DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; twice daily

Borage
Borage is called the 'Herb of Gladness.' It is a general tonic for
the heart, the lungs, the nerves, the mucous membranes, the glands
and the intestines. The seeds contain the same Gammalinoleic acid
(GLA) found in Evening Primrose, which produces Prostaglandin E1 and
helps to combat aging, PMS and strengthens the immune-system and
vessels. Borage is also good for reducing fever and to restore
strength.
USES: Aperient, diaphoretic, fever, galactagogue, pectoral, tonic.
A.K.A.: Bugloss
DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 3 x daily.

Buchu
Buchu, Bearberry and Cranberry are the classical remedies for all
bladder-, urethra- and kidney problems. Buchu, like Willow Herb, is
also used for enlarged prostate.
USES: Aromatic, carminative, diaphoretic, diuretic, stimulant.
DOSAGE: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of boiling water; 3 to 6 times daily.
Tincture: 10 to 30 drops three times daily.

Buckbean
Buckbean is useful as a general tonic and strengthens stomach, liver,
and nerves. It is used for indigestion and amenorrhea (absence of
menstruation). One of its main uses is to reduce fever. It has also
been used for migraine.
USES: Cathartic, fever, tonic.
A.K.A.: Bean trefoil, Bogbean, Marsh trefoil.
DOSAGE: Powder: 1 flat teaspoon 3 x daily. Tea: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup
of boiling water; 3 to 6 times daily.

Buckthorn
Buckthorn is recommended for chronic constipation, but is also a good
tonic for the stomach, intestines and the gallbladder. Fresh bark and
berries may cause serious side-effects! Warning: Large amounts of
berries, especially when unripe, have caused poisonings! See related

USES: Diuretic, purgative.
A.K.A.: Common Buckthorn, Purging buckthorn
DOSAGE: Tincture: 10 to 20 drops once in the evening. ( If this is

Buckwheat
Used for nephritic colic, and pains by gravel. Buckwheat contains
vitamin P and can, therefore, be used to strengthen the capillaries.
The infusion of the herb has been used for Erysipelas.
USES: Astringent, acrid.
A.K.A.: Beechwheat, French Wheat, Heidekorn.
DOSAGE: Use as cereal or tea.

Bugleweed
Bugleweed is a mild but safe anodyne. It is also used to lower the
pulse, any pain, nervousness, stomach problems, indigestion, coughs
and bronchitis. Bugleweed is listed as antithyroid, which means it
should not be used for long when the Thyroid is already underactive!
However, Bugleweed is of great help in case of Hyperthyroidism or
Graves' disease. NOT RECOMMENDED during pregnancy!
USES: Astringent, narcotic, sedative.
A.K.A.: Gipsyweed, Water Bugle.
DOSAGE: Powder 3 grams 3 times daily. Tea: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of
boiling water 6 times daily.

Bupleurum
Bupleurum has been introduced by Chinese medicine where it has been
used for liver problems and to improve circulation. It is also useful
for hemorrhoids, herpes, fever, malaria and intestinal discomfort.
USES: Anti-inflammatory, antimalarial, antipyretic, diaphoretic.
A.K.A.: Hare's ear
DOSAGE: Powder: 3 grams 3 times daily. Tea: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup of
boiling water up to 1 cup every two hours.

Bur Marigold
Bur Marigold combats the flu, colds, fever, malaria, sore throat,
hepatitis, gastroenteritis, appendicitis and hemorrhoids.
USES: Anti-inflammatory, fever, hepatic

Burdock
Among herbalists Burdock root is classified as one of the best blood
and gland purifiers. It is used for eczema and for balancing hormones
in the body as it is said to effect the hypothalamus and the
pituitary, called the master gland. Burdock root is one of the four
herbs used in the well-known anti-cancer remedy 'Essiac.' Next to a
large amount of Inulin, it contains Vit. C, E, A, P, B-group, Paba,
Iron, Sulphur, Silicon, Copper, Iodine and Zinc. Burdock root belongs
to the most basic healing herbs.
USES: Alterative, antipyretic, aperient, cholagogue, diaphoretic,
diuretic.
A.K.A.: Cocklebur, Bardana
DOSAGE: Tincture: 20 drops 3 times daily. Tea: 1 teaspoon for 1 cup
of boiling water; 3 times a day. Powder: 1 flat teaspoon 2 to 3 times
a day.

Burnet
Burnet, also called Pimpernel, may be used for rheumatism, gout,
bladder- and kidney inflammation. It relieves spasm and gas.
USES: Antispasmodic, astringent, carminative, diaphoretic, diuretic,
stomachic.
A.K.A.: Pimpernel, Saxifrage, Pimpinella
DOSAGE: Powder 1 flat teaspoon 3 times daily. Tea: 1 teaspoon for 1
cup of boiling water 3 to 5 times daily.

Butterbur
Butterbur is a tonic for the heart. It is also used for fevers,
colds, asthma and urinary problems. In the distant past is has been
used to combat the plague and was also called Pestwurz. Pest being
the German name for the Black Plague.
USES: Antispasmodic, diaphoretic, diuretic, emmenagogue, vulnerary
DOSAGE: Powder: 1 teaspoon 3 times daily.
