Offering Tobacco

Tobacco is
used by native people to
 represent the honesty that they
carry in their hearts when words are to
be spoken between two people or to the
spirit world. When a request is made, a
teaching is shared, a question is asked,
or a prayer is offered, the tobacco travels
ahead of the words so that honesty
will be received in a kind and
respectful way. To offer tobacco
is to pay an ultimate respect
to that which you
are asking.

I know I ask too many questions...but I was wondering about laying down tobacco.  It seems that when something is given then something, such as tobacco, is replaced.  What is put down when tobacco is taken?  Is it simply the gratitude of our hearts, when tobacco is taken?

Might be the ole braindrain, but I am not understanding your question...but if I am understanding you right....yes, once the tobacco is given, you have shown the person or spirit your intention and your honesty...they in turn will give you their wisdom or response of what you have asked for to begin with...
Have I answered your question?  If not, please let me know and I perhaps I can figure out what you are asking...
A very muddled Witchway today....

Oh, forgot to mention, there are never too many questions....how else is one to learn...this path of life we are on is a learning path...we all have questions throughout our lives...to not ask, is a lost opportunity to learn...

I'm sorry, I have a habit of masking the real question with meaningless phrases...

The question is:  What do we offer as a thank you for taking tobacco in the first place?  Meaning when we pick it from the fields, or buy it in stores, what is given then?

Ok, now I can answer your question...lol!!!
First when buying it in a store, well, it has already been picked, processed and packaged without any thoughts of reverance...So in the past when I didn't have my own tobacco (I grow my own now-was a time living in the city that I couldn't), after I bought it, I said a blessing over the tobacco...that way I felt I had "cleansed" the tobacco...
Now on to picking the tobacco...It is the same when we take anything, my people when they were on a hunt or gathering herbs, food planted and ready for havest, always said a blessing of thanks to the Creator, usually there was a ritual done the night before havesting that all the people participated in...When in a hunt they would thank the beast for it's sacrifice and then take the meat...
Today, when I havest anything from gardens I say a blessing and thank the spirits the opportunity to recieve this and then havest it...
Hope this answers your question....

So then the gratitude is in our hearts...

Thank you!
