When a toenail pierces the flesh of the toe, it can be extremely painful. In severe cases, they cause pus and bleeding and, left untreated, the infection can spread. Women often develop them as a result of cutting nails too low. Cut yours straight after a bath or shower, when they're soft. The corner of the nail should be above the skin.
How to avoid and treat.
Don't wear tight footwear.
Don't be tempted to break off any bits of brittle nail.
Moist feet are more prone to ingrowing toenails, so when it's hot, wear open-toed sandals.
If you develop one, see your chiropodist as soon as possible. In the meantime, bathe the foot in salt water to stop infection.
Afterwards, apply a clean sterile dressing, especially if you have a discharge. Rest your foot as much as possible.
You might need antibiotics as well as having the spike of nail removed.
If the problem recurs, see your chiropodist for advice.
Don't neglect this condition, my DED had to have her big-tow nail removed entirely because of an ingrowing toe nail.
As soon as I've time I'll deal with other foot problems.
