1)  If buying expensive items such as fridges, freezers and TV's visit price comparison sites like kelkoo.co.uk and pricerunner.co.uk before parting with your money.

2)  Closely check all of your direct debits to make sure you are not shelling out for gym subscriptions or mobile phones that you don't use  Just ask the bank for a list of your Direct Debits.

3)  Call the Pension Service (0800 991 2341) or the tax credit helpline (0845 300 3900) to make sure you are getting all your benefits.

4)  Compare petrol prices in your area by visiting free price comparison site petrolprices.com

5)  If you live in a city, near a stadium, theatre or concert hall, why not rent your parking space to motorists desperate for somewhere to park?  At parkatmyhouse.com homeowners are put in touch with drivers searching for facilities.

another five coming up soon.

I notice it says 6 ways in the title but it should have been 5 as I was putting half of them on.  Anyway here's another 5.

6)  Make sure you get the best deal on both home and motor insurance by visiting price comparison sites such as comparethemarket.com, fool.co.uk, confused.com or similar.

7)  Make sure you are getting the best deal on digital TV by comparing packages at digitalchoices.co.uk

8)  Protecting your PC with security hardware can cost more than £50 but you can save by downloading useful, free alternatives with such as AVG Free Antivirus and ZoneAlarm Free Firewall.

9)  Drinking, smoking less and eating fewer take-aways will leave both your body and your wallet feeling far healthier.

10)  If you're buying a new car, make sure you haggle with the salesman.  Dealers are desperate for business right now!
