1. Choose supermarket own brands for basic ingredients - you could save £240 a year (Sainsbury's baked beans and white bread both cost just 57p).
2. Use the internet to check out special offer before you go shopping. Register at:
for all the latest discounts from the big four supermarkets.
3. Don't waste food - use left-overs from the Sunday roast to whip up a Bolognese, bubble and squeak and pasta sauce or make stock. See:
4. Buy fuir and veg in season as it will cost less if there is a glut in supply. Check out the following site for ideas:
5. Make an extra batch of food for the freezer so the family can enjoy a 'free' meal now and then. I usually make double quantity when making a casserole and freeze half.
6. Forage for food - berries are plentiful at this time of year and are perfect for smoothies or to make sauces.
7. Choose frozen and canned foods which last for ages. Frozen veg has just has many nutrients as fresh, while canned fish and beans are good for your health.
8. Don't throw away unwanted veg - add water, herbs and a stock cube and you have a hearty bowl of soup.
9. Buy in bulk with friends - then just split up the multi-packs.
10. Don't be tempted by buy-one-get-one-free offers. They're great for basics and household products, but to buy two of somethying you don't need is just daft.
11. Watch those out-of-date labels - reach to the back of the shelves in supermarkets, as the freshest stock will be lurking there.
12. Use cash instead of a credit or debit card - you can see exactly what you are spending and be less likely to splurge on treats and offers that you'll never use.
13. Don't store bananas with other fruits - they give off gas that makes other fruit ripen (and go off) too quickly.
14. Wah fruit when you get them home and put any that are showing signs of rotting in the compost heap so it doesn't spread and ruin other produce.
15. Don't buy bottled water - sales are down as filling from the tap is cheaper and reduces landfil that's bad for the environment.
16. Don't shop when you are hungry or you'll chuck everything you crave in your trolley.
17. Don't ignore the reduced sections - supermarkets discount fresh foods after 5pm and remember that lots of fresh food can be frozen.
