Some foods are free on any diet system and we should make the most of them. Although these foods do contain calories they are normally used in tiny quantities such as herbs and spices, and therefore the calories are hardly worth bothering about; or they provide terrific amounts of healthy nutrients and lots of bulk for very few calories, such as most vegetables.
Use these foods to get maximum value from your calorie allowance. For example, if you need extra calories for a special meal, you could save by making the centre-piece of your quick meals a free veg soup or salad or free veg curry or stir-fry, perhaps adding a slice of bread or a little meat or fish.
If you buy fresh herbs but only need to use a small amount, freeze the surplus for use in soups, sauces and casseroles. You could finish your meal with a piece of fruit or a yoghurt and you've got a satisfying low calorie meal.
I am against feeling deprived, no-one likes it, so fill up your plate with healthy free foods - as many as you like, you don'rt have to count them. Your stomach will only start sending "I'm feeling full" messages to your brain when it is physically full. A good size meal will send this message better than a bar of chocolate even though it may contain fewer calories
Good Ideas
Extend mince with lots of chopped vegetables
Add lots of veggies to casseroles and stews
Add a salad on the side (yes, it's cold outside but not inside lol)
Bulk out sandwiches and rolls with lots of salad
Add a dollop of sugar-free jelly to your pud
Make salsas and pickles from finely chopped veggies dressed with lemon juice, lime juice or balsamic vinegar.
Onward and downwards,
happy slimming,
