Soup it up

Tests have shown that having a bowl of soup before a meal can mean you are satisfied with smaller portions of the main course.  It saeems a logical conclusion as the colume of liquid helps to fill your stomach.  Of course, if you want to lose weight, you do need to ensure that your soup is a nice 'free' one, otherwise you could actually end up having more calories!

However, what is strange is that having a large glass of water with a meal doesn't seem to have the same lasting effect as liquidising the same meal with water to make it into soup.  Tests seem to indicate that the soup version gives a more lasting satisfaction.

The possible reason for this is that water is usually absorbed very quickly into our body, but when liquidised with other ingredients these slow down the rate of absorbtion, thus keeping a larger volume of food in our stomachs for longer.

You will find a lot of delicious 'free' soups under Recipes - Soups down the left side. and I am now going to add another.

Onward and downward,
hugs
Joan
