Being overweight makes it more difficult to control your blood glucose levels.  It can cause high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol, you're more likely to develop coronary heart disease or have a stroke.

Losing weight will help you manage your diabetes more easily and increase your chances of living longer.

If you're trying to lose weight, tell your doctor or diabetes nurse as you may have to adjust your medication dosage to suite the changes in your diet and the new, slimmer you.

Tips for reducing weight successfully

Eat the right balance of healthy foods. (see Healthy Eating habits)

Do more physical activity  (see Keeping Active)

Use a smaller plate to help you eat smaller portions

Instead of frying food, try grilling, baking, poaching or steaming

Use pulses instead of meat in casseroles and soups

Snap out of bad habits such as having a biscuit with your tea or coffee

Keep busy, take up a new hobby to help you stop snacking

Snacks aren't all bad, as long as you choose healthy options:

Tempted by:                             Replace with:
Biscuits                                      Apple or banana
Cheese and crackers                    Fruit bun
Packet of crisps                           Popcorn (unsweetened)
Slice of fruit cake                        Slice of malt loaf
Full fat yoghurt                            Low calorie/diet yoghurt

Shopping

Whether you're trying to lose weight or improve your diet, the choice you make at the supermarket can make a difference.

When you reach the check-out, the contents of your trolley should reflect the chart on Healthy Eating Habits, with plenty of fruit, vegetables and starchy foods, and moderate amounts of lean meat and pounltry, fish and dairy products.

If you buy ready-meals, sauces and other manufactured foods, remember that these can be high in faty, salt and sugar, so always check the labels.
