Diabetic retinopathy is a common complication that can result in permanent damage to your sight if it's not detected and treated quickly.
The condition is caused by abnormal or leaky blood vessels in your retina which stops light reaching it in the usual way, eventually leading to impaired vision. It's important to have regular eye examinations as these will pick up on the early signs of changes to your retina.
If you develop diabetic retinopathy, you may need laser treatment to seal the leaky blood vessels and destroy the abnormal ones. While not painful, you may find it uncomfortable, but it is highly effective in maintaining vision.
How to protect your sight
Control your blood glucose levels.
Keep your blood pressure below 140/80.
Have an eye examination at least once a year - free in the UK to people with diabetes.
If you have any concerns about your sight, talk to your doctor or optometrist right away.
When you have an eye examination or laser treatment, you'll probably be given eye drops. These will make your vision blurred for a while so avoid driving.
