Great ideal for a board .

Whenever I have free time I am reading. My nose in a book is the best way to relax. Usually I find myself reading a series of books but if there is a single book to read please let me know.

The Left Behind Series, by Tim Lahaye was the last series I read and I give it 5

Pay It Forward, by Catherine Ryan Hide was the last single book I read and it was much better than the movie (aren't they always).

Charlie

Freethought and Gregory - I have Tropic of Capricorn as well as many of Marquez's books and haven't gotten to them yet.  Shame on me!!  (I also have Tropic of Cancer, I think, and two works by Anais Nin, close to Miller)

There exists a book of letters sent to and from Nin and Miller that is a fascinating read.  You know, Anais Nin admitted to having an affair with her father.

I just finished a great new book called "Shadow of The Wind" by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. It was a huge hit in the author's native Spain, and just released in the US. It is set in Barcelona, and has everything a book should have: great characters, a little suspense, a little mystery, a little love story, tragedy, comedy, etc. I adored it! When I finished, I picked up this week's Entertainment Weekly, and Stephen King's back page column is praising this same book (along with another good one- "The Stones of Summer" by Dow Mossman.

I just finished The Book of Ruth by Jane Hamilton and I highly recommend it. The book is small and somewhat simple but excellent. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Was that (The Book of Ruth) made into a TV movie very recently?  About a girl always being put down and controlled by her mother - ends up married?  I don't want to say much here in case it's the same one.

Yes, Lolo. I saw the movie first then read the book. That is the best way to do it. The book always enhances the movie but the movie never enhances the book.

LOL Cindi! My favorite bumper sticker says "Don't judge a book by its movie"!

Oh yeah, I made that mistake only once.  I read Firestarter and then went to the movie within a couple of weeks of reading it.  Hated the movie.  But here's the funny part, I have seen the movie since and it's actually a very good movie without the book being so fresh in my mind.

I just reserved The Lovely Bones at the library - there's a short wait.   I had forgotten all about this book.  Thanks for the reminder!

Right now, I'm reading The Dogs of Babel by Carolyn Parkhurst.   It came out in 2003 and was one of Today's book club picks.  It's about a linguistics professor whose wife suddenly dies and their dog was the only witness.  He teaches his dog to communicate what she knows.  I'm about a third into it and am enjoying it very much - hard to put down.

I finished reading The Lovely Bones last night.  What a story!   I read it in 2 days - hard to put down.  I want to share what a few other authors wrote about it as they capture it perfectly, imo:

"The Lovely Bones is the kind of novel that, once you're done, you may go visit while wondering through a bookstore and touch on the binding, just to remember the emotions you felt while reading it.  Intensely wise and gorgeously written."

"The Lovely Bones is one of the strangest experiences I have had as a reader in a long time, and one of the most memorable."

Lucky (by the same author) is now included in my summer reading list!
