in only 13 days, Spidey 2 has amassed a whopping $262mil.  It set a new record for hitting $200mil in only 8 days of wide release.

And Shrek 2 is currently the record holder for fastest to $300 mil with 18 days.  That gives Spidey 5 days to make $38mil...could happen, but will be rough.

Also, Fahrenheit 9/11 is still plugging along at about $82mil in 20 days.  I honestly can't believe that we're looking at a documentary-non-fiction piece cracking the $100mil plateau.  Crazy.

Shrek 2 is finally starting to slow down...at $419mil it only needs $12mil to move past Episode 1 into 4th place all time.  Considering it is still bringing in $750k per day (on weekdays) and close to $1.5mil on weekend days...it should amass tha much as well as the $16mil needed to pass ET for 3rd place all time.  I think it would need a re-release (maybe at the end of summer, they'll push it back into theaters for one last run) to pull in the $41mil needed to pass Star Wars for 2nd place...but it's still possible, I s'pose.

In other box office news...Dodgeball is looking to crack $100 mil here shortly, and Will Ferrell proved he's no fluke opening Anchorman to $28mil while King Arthur is going straight into the tank as one of the biggest flops of the summer thus far.

Also, Harry Potter 3 looks to have a good chance to outpace Potter 2, but not come even close to the first film.

And that should do it for today.

Later,
jim

These kid-oriented movies always rake in the bucks.

Ya know....kids flicks haven't always been the big money makers.  Just in the last 15-20 years or so (I'd have to go back to The Little Mermaid)....studios have realized there's huge money to be made in kid flicks...IF they cater just a little bit of them to adults.

And if you look at the successes...all of the Pixar films, the Shrek films....they all have a lot of adult humor and references in them.

You look at some of the failures...most recently Home on the Range, and it was because there was very little adult appeal.

Now, you also have films like Atlantis and Titan: AE and they're examples of animation going maybe a little too old and they didn't fare well.

But, the studios have definitely figured it out...and since films like Shrek 2 and Finding Nemo are making the cash it makes it real nice for those of us with young children to know that there will always be plenty of movies you can fell comfortable taking your kids to.

The next ones to watch out for this fall will be Shark Tale and The Incredibles....we'll see huge box office out of them for the same reason.
