Yes the commentators on TV and his trainer said Smarty was tooooooo excited and did not get into a "cruise mode" but kept pressing and never relaxed and conserved energy......
Smarty IS a gr8 horse!!! But WOW did u see how the winner came from way back and kept catching up....he was strong!!!!!
Yeah... always makes you wonder. I've seen races thrown before. I once had an inside at a california fair horse track, and that guy always called them right. He said that the jockeys needed to make money somehow.
The length of the race is a crucial factor. That the Belmont is a longer run just makes that triple so hard to grab. I did not see Smarty dogging it and thought he was going to run right in, but that other horse came flying up on the outside and that is what often happens in the longer races.
