What can we do with these young girls that dye their hair black and then want to go as light as possible????

I looked back on the board and got some possible solutions. She has a couple of inches of regrowth and wants to go as light as possible.

I really with they wouldnt dye their hair black...

Donna

My first thought is to educate them..........you can do all that processing at once, their hair will fall out or feel like straw........get them to think ahead.....

Really they most likely don't know any better, and just think it's fun to do.........and want to see change..........

Let them know we can offer change w/o burning up their hair........introduce them to extensions........they know have so many fun colors that can spice things up....and change their look quickly........just a thought....hope that helps! :O)

I wish they wouldn't either! They have to understand to remove it completely, it's going to be gradual. I would start out by removing as much as the black as possible, toning it, and then highlight. I would do this after every 6 week retouch visit, going lighter every time.

I totally agree with some of those approachs...but I also like to stick with the idea that if I don't feel its gonna lift enough and their hair is gonna be a mess I tell them "no".   I'd rather be known as the stylst that said "no" rather than the stylist that fried their hair.

I agree with star and candi-cuts... Both are alot of mi thoughts.. I am like candi in the sense of EDUCATING THEM..... They have to know what they are actually doing when they do all that and how it makes things so complex... at the same time... they need to understand that when using something over the conter that it is usually non-compatiable with professional product when we get a hold of it and turns the service into a CORRECTIVE COLOR Which COST THEM LOTS OF MONEY in the long run.... I usually tell my clients.... my philophy on home hair color is this....

If there one of the older ladies where they been coloring their own hair forever and like the result and baiscally just do the regrowth maintaining the same color.. MORE POWER 2 U... But if u go from one extreme to the next on ur own.. THAT WHERE IT NEEDS TO BE LEFT TO US THE PROS... Cause oviously it not as easy as we make it look... and there really is alot to take into consideration to achieve where exactly they want to be to see a drastic change .... That my thoughts on it..... Hope that helps some too...--- HUGS AND LUV-- Leslie

OOO Jus saw what manda said.. I DO THAT TOO... If the hair can't take it I TELL EM UP FRONT AND AGREES I WOULD RATHER BE KNOWN AS THE HAIRDRESSER THAT SAID NO THAN THE ONE THAT FRIED THEIR HAIR UP.... SO TRUE.....DOING THAT TOO... IT HELPS PRESERVE OUR INTEGRITY.... I did once refuse a girl for continuing to not take mi advice to get her hair healthy she could not keep rebleaching and rebleaching over hair that is alreadi been touched with bleach.... Told her that it would melt off.. When I told her all that She was like ...'I thought mi hair was healty' I was like NOO.... And I am sorry I will not and can not do this service.... Although it would be easy for me to say Yes and just do it... I REFUSE CAUSE I KNOW THE RESULT WON'T BE GOOD.. AND I WILL NOT COMPRISE THE VERY THING I ADVOCATE TO CLIENTS WHICH IS HEALTY HAIR....

I was one of those girls before I went to school, many times. I have screwed my hair up so many times, I started when I was 13, when I was 15 I discovered Sally's. I am now 28, and in my second semester........
The last time I messed up my hair is when I went black and wanted to go platinum...... I did it over a year ( the processing), but my hair was sooooooo fried, I just chopped it off into a pixie cut so I could get it healthy again.
I really think suggesting high/lowlights  is a good option  as it is dramatic and less damaging.  I never thought of it when I was doing all that at home, and of course it is hard to DIY.  I think another aspect is price,  not that you want to lose clients, but if they want to mess with their hair themselves, suggest the local college which is reasonably priced compared to a regular salon and/or having to pay for corrective color.
