Ok I work for Regis SmartStyle... some of you may remember that... anyway...
Our manager left (again) she is always in and out... So they offered the job to another stylist there... I personally have always thought that this one would make an awesome manager, she just has this personality that would serve her well in that position... When another of the stylists found out about this she decided she wanted the job, which is understandable, I myself wanted to put in for it but didnt because they offered it to the one girl. I figured if she decided that she was interested great and if not then I would tell them I was or if she tried it and didnt like it and wanted to step back down I would go for it ya know. ANYWAY... They tested both of them and then said that they both did badly on the test. So I called and they refused to even test me, said that they were just going to go with someone outside of the shop. I think maybe they were afraid of it causing conflict between the stylists, but honestly what they have done has caused more. The one they offered it to is hurt, the other one they tested has made many comments that since we dont have a boss she is just gonna act like she is, (her personality sucks, and she does try to boss us all around which isnt going over so well) and Im hurt that they wouldnt even test me. LOL Its all a big mess and everyone is short with each other right now. I have always been the one to just say ok whatever and get runover while others act like total bitches and get everything they want, so while it isnt really my personality I am going to start being more demanding. I have been there since sept and was there for a year before I got my divorce, and I still to this day do not have a set schedule. You cant build a clientele when you have no clue when you will work next. All the other girls have set days. With the exception of the one part timer. I am full time and I think I deserve a set schedule as well. Is that wrong???  I mean I know when vacations and time off come about you have to move around a lil to help out and that is totally cool with me but its ALWAYS this way. Maybe the new manager coming from the outside will be the best thing for this shop.

Wow, I think it's wrong they didn't even test you! In all the years I've worked for Smartstyle, I've noticed upper management pick managers who would be "puppets" for them. Maybe they see you as the strong and independant type, which you should be glad you are. If it's any consulation, the pay is not worth the headaches you would have gotten. We're short handed right now, the manager went to Europe for 2 weeks, we have only 4 of us running the shop, and because I've been there so long, I've been given the responsibility of doing management duties for no extra pay. I have not gotten as much as a thank you from the DM, just a note to clean my station. This is while I'm also expected to take care of the clients in a busy shop, do the ordering, check computer messages, check the mail, come in to open the paychecks, etc. I've also been working 6 days because of this, and I'm expecting a really big paycheck. I wouldn't even still be there if it wasn't the busiest shop in the area. Well, at least we're getting a new DM, it's about time!

I agree, a favor in disguise.........I think it's wrong and discrimatory that they didn't give you the opportunity to be tested when you showed interest in the position.  Where is the growth and development with the company?

The bossy one doesn't belong being the boss!  A bosss doesn't mean hire a dictator.......and boss / manager is like a president.......the person who is suppose to listen to everyone, show patience, protect everyone's interest, lead by example......

Being bossy just reveals they have controlling personalities........

You'd probably make a great manager, if that's what you wanted to do.......and I would keep my eyes open for somewhere else to work

I work for smartstyle too ,  I noticed also that the supervisor do pick the "puppet" t ypes.. sorry to say, i love my job, but  I wouldn't want to be a manager at our salon. The managers have no power. They are glorified paper pushers, at least our is. She can't hire, fire ,write ppl up or do anything w/o our supervisors permission. Star you are soooo right about Smartstyle. I have been with my salon since we opened 3 yrs ago.  I have been tested for the mngr. position and turned it down. I don't want it. I  make 45% commission now, i love my hours and don't need all the headache for a little more pay. I'm building a clientel and one day hope to go to a chair rental spot.
Happy cutting
