Depending on stylist, it is ok to lighten relaxed hair. My clientele is mostly African American and I have several clients with beautiful highlights and their hair is exceptionally healthy. Moisture loss is a big issue when it comes to coloring African American hair period when the hair is relaxed, so as long as you practice healthy hair, are using great products for color treated hair, you can't go wrong. Use your best judgement, research the products you decide to use and always keep "healthy hair" on your mind.
