What are the job duties are of an assistant. |

Well, when I was an assistant, I had many jobs. They were shampooing, sweeping, making cofee, running errands, cutting foils, cleaning, handing perm rods, handing foils, just about everything except what the hairstylists did. They would sit when they had down time, but assistants weren't allowed to. I also had to watch stylists work, but then got interupted when duties needed to be done. I learned a little bit while watching, and also understood that this was a right of passage. In those days, there was no other option. I wasn't there no more than two weeks until the manager let me go, complaining about her budget. Part of it I think is when she had me do little things to break me in, the clients would get nervous because they knew I was beginning. It wasn't easy! If I were to hire an assistant, I would worry less that I wasn't paying the assistant to "sit", and concentrate more on training her for her future. Are you thinking about hiring an assitstant? |

let me tell u my story...ive been at this place for 10 mo and when i started i need to build a book so i assited during the week and did hair on Sat.(while in school)this was the deal because i was experianced but did not have license. Since then i have graduated and it didnt take long for me to build a book. now im still assisting 2 nights a week and im confused as to why she hasnt started looking for another assistant.but the problem is this.. I do all of her work...Relaxers, color, sets, whatever and all she does is add the style. i know that i shold not be doing all of this but i wanted to make sure im not crazy and to top it all off i get paid 40$ a night at this point i just want her to find another assistant but dont u think thats kinda crazy??? |

I have talked about this before, and in my experiences, assistants hardly ever end up behind the chair after assisting in the same salon. How do you feel? Do you still feel like you need more training, or do you feel confident enough to stop assisting? She might have gotten too used to you being an assistant, and doesn't want to lose you. That is known to happen too. Well, to be honest, what it sounds like to me, is that you are already doing a stylist's job. Usually it's the assistant who does the styling (I've heard). If you already have a full book, I feel that you should be making commission off what you do instead of being paid $40 a day. She is taking the credit and money for your work! That's not fair. Talk to the owner about it, that you feel you're ready. If she doesn't agree with you, I think you need to take your clients and move somewhere else. You already could do it! |

why not tell her that you would no longer wish to be an assistant, and that she needs to find a new assistant. tell your boss how you feel about the situtaion. she may not even realize that you don't want to do it any longer. if you do it in a respectful way, you should get a positive response, at least she'll know how you feel about it. |

i know i dont need more training ive been doing hair for 14 years its just that ive gotten away with not being liscenced because my friend ownd the salon.and i didnt have time for school but now that ive moved to a whole different town ileft my book behind so i had to start from the bottom i finnally got school out of the way. In fact im the best in there out side of her. And she knows that i did not plan on assisting very long |

yea i thought about that but but she owns the place and im afraid that if she is not happy with me not assisting anymore then she could control my book as far as new people that come in and call...i have also had anothe job offer thats paying 70% as opposed to 50% but i just dont know if ican afford the transition right now |

I can understand your not wanting to move to a new place right now because you're uncertain about the future. But, I think Lisa is right, telling the owner how you feel in a respectful way, just might work. You obviously are too good to be assisting. The fact is, is that what the owner is paying you isn't compensating for your hard work anyway, so either way, I feel it's worth the risk. |

where i work...... sweep floor shampoo keep hairdressers aware of next client always be one step ahead of the hairdressers put orders away CLEAN |

I have a rental salon & one of my stylist is wanting to hire a shampoo girl or an asstistant which is fine. However she just wants to pay a few dollar a shampoo or very meger wages. When I hired a shampoo girl I always paid them at least minium wage. I have no ideal about assistant. Help? |

Sorry i didnt update ladies .....after i posted that message i ran into a friend of mine and he told me his sister was looking for a job so i told her to go to my job and fill out an app..well some time passed and finally at our staff meeting for the month of October we were introduced to our NEW assistant  so everything worked out good..got my license YA_HOO!!!and it all good (slow right now but its all good) oh we have since got another assistant so now we have 2 |
