Well, I had to say a prayer before I killed my client. This is the story:
"Can you make it slightly darker than the last time?" Sure I can! She's pleased when she leaves. Next month, "Can you make it slightly darker than the last time?"  Sure, no prob. She's even more pleased. The next month, "You know dear, I think I want to go like the 2nd last color. Thank you." So, then you educate your client by telling them that color doesn't remove color and that going lighter just can't happen in minutes. I give her the option of highlights to lighten it up slightly. Nope. She wants her entire head lighter. So, I do just that. Remove the 1 level of color that she finds too dark, then tone, then reapply the color that she desires. "That looks great! But I think you were right. I should have gone with highlights." So when she comes to pay, she freaks out. I had explained to her the process of removing color and re-applying would cost her much more than a usual re-touch. So, the next time she came, she wanted to go DARKER AGAIN! She's driving me nuts!

Tell her that her hair will FALL OUT if she cannot decide on one color. That usually works for me. I always say, it's better to be too light than too dark, because that's what causes damage when you have to lighten it up again. She sounds like someone that you just can't please. That's one of the times it's better to just go home, take a hot bath, and put it out of your mind!

Boy, do I know that feeling!!!! There should be special exemptions where you could kill them because it is effecting your mental health!!! I went through that with a teenage girl who made an appointment for herself for all over color and then comes in and shows me a picture of some movie star that has 10 different colors in it and here hair is colored with permenant color at a level 7 she is scheduled for 2 hours and has long hair. I went through explained it all to her just as you did your client recomending hilites with bleach and then after all that she asks me why I can't just put a color over it?!!! Then on top of all this the step mom is on the other side of the salon getting a manicure and I have to walk over there explain the whole thing to her and she is aware of the fact that the appointment she made is not what is in the picture that the girl is showing me. Then she asks if I can do partial hilight for the same price as an all over color. Then when I get done she only tipped me 5.00 for a 65 dollar service. So I here ya like I said there should be special law!

I KNOW THAT THOSE KIND OF CLIENTS CAN DRIVE YOU NUTS. IT SOUNDS LIKE SHE LOVES THE COLOR WHEN SHE LEAVES, SO I'M THINKING MAYBE BECAUSE OF THE FADING THAT SHE SEES BY THE TIME SHE COMES BACK FOR THE RETOUCH MIGHT BE THE PROBLEM. DO YOU HAVE HER USE ANY KIND OF SHAMPOO OR COND. THAT HAS COLOR IN THEM TO HELP WITH FADING? ARTEC HAS SOME GREAT COLOR SHAMPOOS. JUST A THOUGHT.

GET THIS, I HAD A NEW CLIENT COME IN, SHE WAS ABOUT 25 TO 30% GREY AND SHE WANTED HER GREY COVERED, ONLY HER GREY. SHE DIDN'T WANT ANY COLOR TO TOUCH THE REST OF HER HAIR. I TOLD HER THAT WOULD BE ALMOST IMPOSSILBLE. SHE SAID WHY? AND THAT EVERY STYLIST HAD TOLD HER THE SAME THING AND SHE COULDN'T BELIEVE THAT YOU COULDN'T COLOR THE GREY WITHOUT TOUCH THE OTHER HAIR. I TOLD HER , BECAUSE I WOULD HAVE TO PICK OUT EVERY GREY  HAIR AND COLOR IT INDIVIDUALLY. SHE DIDN'T UNDERSTAND WHY I WOULDN'T WANT TO DO THAT. I FINALLY HAD TO TELL HER THAT I DIND'T BELIEVE I WAS THE RIGHT STYLIST FOR HER AND I COULDN'T GIVE HER WHAT SHE WANTED AND THAT ENDED OUR CONSULTATION.

Yeah, thankfully I've never gotten a request like that! I agree, it's better not to get involved than trying to make someone understand something as simple as that.

Omg...too funny. "Ma'am, you couldn't afford to have that service done!"  haha
It's funny she didn't believe all the other stylists when they told her the same thing.

I have a client who I have done for 7 years. She is in college now. Since I have known her she has always wanted to go from a heavy foil to dark. Every time I have foiled her hair she wants low lights so it will look darker. I have done 6 or 7 level lowlights and she cries for two days until we can rehighlight. So now she goes to college and comes back and says I want to be all dark. I looked her straight in the face and said "I think that's a great idea. You will look so good dark (dark skin, blue eyes=gorgeous). However, every time we even add lowlights you freak." She insisted it was what she wanted. So I said "There will be no crying in my chair. If you need to cry, go home and do it and we'll highlight you tomorrow. You will not cry in my chair." She ended up loving it and she really was ready for it!

OMG!!  I get into this with one of my clients, only with a cut.  She has super thick, super wavy hair and she insists on a diagonal forward...( a very dramatic one at that)  Every time I do it she has a new complaint...from one side being longer to the other, so I fix it a little snip at a time(mind you, it isn't uneven, its just her curl pattern...grrr) to OMG now the other side is longer!  So I've gotten to the point now that I don't even really cut it when she thinks its screwed up.  And low and behold, it looks great!! lmao!  And on top of it, she's got bangs issues...she wants to grow out the heavy part and just leave a little wisp, but every time she comes back in, she's cut more bangs herself.  I finally told her that if she insists on cutting her own hair, there really isn't much point in paying me to do it.  I also strongly suggested that she take a flying leap over to another salon before I put my foot in her ass....she hasn't been back!!!  YESSSSSSS!

I can completely relate to every one of you. I have had clients like this. The funny thing is when I left one shop and moved to another I thought that at least I won't have to deal with the problems clients. Well, the other day the problem client found me! Dang, and I thought that I would lose her. Marla
