Does anyone here own a salon? If so, has anyone taken on a partner?  Have you had good or not so good results?  I have a partner and I am looking for some advice. I have had a terrible experience and need some good solid advice, I am a new start up salon but I have been in the "business" for 9 years.  The person I choose to be a partner is not the person I thought they were.  We were supposed to put up equal capital, $2400 and share rent, utilities 50-50. Purchase own supplies, retail ect. It is a small 2 chair salon very low overhead. Well he has not put up but $300, I have over $3000.  I just returned from my accountant.  SScary huh.  Well I am in the process of trying to get him out. It gets worse, I must have loser on my forehead but, he told me he had taken the state board exam, and recieved his grade of 89% and they would be sending his license in the mail, well it has been 4 weeks and no license.  Guess what he is just out of school and hasn't even applied for the boards yet. Lovely huh.  Talk about venting.  Our agreement is very informal but he has broken his side of contract I called a meeting on Sunday he doesn't show! So I left a new contract and a letter at the shop in case he goes back, I am changing the locks on Tuesday, and hopefully see-ya.  I tried to call today but he answered and acted like he couldn't hear me, urgh! He knows he's busted.  Any Advice on what to do or has anyone ever been as lucky as me to get involved with such a man.  I sound like a whiney unexperienced girl, I know better I have tons of experience, business and management I can usually see them coming but not this time!!! Thanks for letting me rant. Glad to be here.

wow!
you need to cut that boy loose. asap! if you let him stay you are just asking for more of the same.
i was a salon owner for a few years. i had a partner, she was a nail tech and i was the hair stylist. there were a few bumps in our working relationship , but we had good communication and worked them out, and we worked with each other for 9 years in the same salon before we went into buisness together. partnerships are risky. i wouldn't do it again uless i knew the person really well, knew they had the money to invest , knew how serious  and responsible they were about the buiness.
i hope it all works out for you, and that you have great success in your salon.

Where are you located primsalon? In New York, we don't even receive a grade, it's either P or F. Anyway, you are very fortunate to even get your foot in the door to opening your own salon. It doesn't even sound like you even need this guy. It's very hard to find a partner that you can trust, that's why many people are leary about it. And, besides that, it is against the law to operate without a license. This is very good reason to kick him out. He had it made finding a partner that was willing to work with him, and not having very high overhead. I wish I could be that lucky. How long have you known this person? It could be real easy to trust someone when you are excited about getting something going, and you become blind to the type of person you're dealing with. Don't get discouraged, this might be more of a struggle now, but will work out to your advantage in the long run. Are you able to continue running the business without a partner?

Gulp...I hope so. It gets worse today. I left him the dissolve contract because every time I try to get him over there he never shows up. But he called my landlady and said we were planning on closing the doors and moving. What? Thank god I called her to tell her about rekeying the place. I told her no such thing was going to happen so I am praying she will even let me sign the lease by myself but she knows I have been paying the bills all the checks in my name. She has to fax her lawyer the forms, and meet with me tomorrow.  Who calls a landlady and makes themself look stupid. The contract just stated that he was relinquishing all debts to the business, and because of his lack of capital he broke the agreement.  Dumb boy. So now I get to take him to court. Yeah>>>>Thank god we never got that business account!  I go to the shop after smoothing her over (we are closed mondays) and the little s*!@ got all of his stuff and took the business license and the state board license right out of the frame.  Took perm rods left the air on 60 degrees and left evry light on in the place. Childish.  Lord help me. I called him and thank goodness I got his machine because I would have told him off. But I will survive... Then he leaves me this criptic post it a post it note!!! I'll get mine for doing this to him. Ha Doing this to him. RIGHT. Can you tell I am mad.... So I have an appointment with the SBA, Score, and landlady all tomorrow. Please don't ever get a partner! Be warned. I have known him for a while. I did Beauty school visits to his school with my last company. So I believed him. I am in Tennessee, I moved from AZ we didnot get a grade til a month or so later, in the mail but here you get a grade that day P/F.  I could be shut down for him not having his license!  Never again. I want a booth renter but I am afraid too.  Thanks for replies.  Wish me luck keep you posted.  Also, can he do anything with the licenses?  I think he did it to be an idiot. But???
