I don't know what I can do to change the salon's morale....

My boss, the owner, breaks every rule ever made and thinks it's normal. Smokes in salon, drinks while working.....

I like working there because of it's location, and I like my coworkers, and I am starting to have a clientele there, we're a busy salon.

I just know he's not suppose to do it, things have been said, but ignored. Others don't say anything, either because they feel it's pointless, or they enjoy breaking the rules too.....

Wondering what others may say about it...

It's apparent from all my vent posts that I don't totally agree with how the shop I work at is run. Everyone breaks the rules all the time, and it's frustrating to watch, and know that you are the only one following the rules, and who seems to give a damn. What I've learned from all of that, is that it is NOT going to change! I've also learned to ignore those not doing their job, and concentrate on my own, and my clients.

I also understand you like the location you're at, and who you work with, because so do I. And well...the smoking and drinking, at least where I live it's against the law. Regardless of whether it's his salon, and can do what he wants, let an inspector catch your boss smoking, or a client smell liquor on his breath, and it's over for him. Unfortunately, it will also be over for all of you if he loses his business.

I don't suggest you leave right now because of this, because you like it there, but I do suggest you start taking your client's contact information, because it's only a matter of time before your boss's rule breaking catches up with him, and find yourself looking for a new job. You might also end up opening your own salon too! Good luck!

Dont any of the bosses clients have anything to say about the smoking and drinking? I agree that you need to get contact info on the clients that like you. Once that place is closed down you can start up your own. Loyal clients will follow you anywhere.

If your boss breaks those rules then cleanliness is most likely a problem too. Yuck. Sounds like a sloppy way to run things. I wouldnt like to have my hair done in a  place run by someone like that. I worked for a slob for years. I had to clean the whole place to keep it decent for people to come in.

Once i left there (actually i was fired for speaking my mind after many many years)  and opened my own place the writing was on the wall. Im 4 times busier here than i was at the dirty place that was run by a rude person.

I would love to own the keys to my own salon!!!  I would run it so differently, and as environmentally conscious as possible.  However, I am going to school full time, and graduate spring '09 - I am also studying psychology and environmental policy, insitution, and behavior................so I have at least two more years before I can spend more hours in the salon.

Your right I should be taking down my clients info........I have for my color clients, but not for haircuts only........thank you!

I am the only one who cleans the salon........I clean it for my clients, but I am only there on teh weekends.........I also became the "cleaning lady" and get paid once a month for cleaning the salon.  It shouldn't be that way............but also I know most cleaning service business (well the ones my boss is willing to pay for) don't clean everything the way it should be.......like you can't use the same rag to wipe everything down, it only spreads germs........

To answer about his clients........most of the salon is patronized by his clients only, we hardly get "new business", we wind up working on his clients.....someone shampoos, someone does the color.....someone does the blow outs, while he cuts them..........most of the people that have been coming to him for years.....either put up with him.....or have similiar personalities.........

The next step for me, would be to open my own salon, either with a business partner or on my own......I have worked already at too many salons, and they all had their flaws........some more extreme than others

Thank you both for writing back so quickly

Hi Candy, you need to gather all of your clients info, keep a copy of all at home and keep working until you feel you have a good clientele that you can move. Start looking around for another salon that has more class because this is your lively-hood, you deserve to have your clients in a nice place, they deserve that! They will admire you for your respect for yourself and them. Good luck!!!

Hey Candy,
GIRL YOUR NOT ALONE CAN I JUST SAY THAT!!???
I work in a similar situation... the former manager who jus stepped down does that very same thing... our new manager has told him about that ... NO SMOKING IN THE SALON It just gets ingored and aww well he not listening ...
He also smokes in the bathroom WHICH IS REALLY BAD!!!! Cause it hard to breathe in there jus to go pee sometimes!!!! But he seems to have no remorse or morale at all.... There not much I can do either cause I am not in mangagement.... and honestly I think my current manager is sort of a push over a lil bit.. she just lets people off the hook... I think cause she is afraid if she writes them up or something it will cause tension and she does'nt want to do that... but like I told her... IF YOUR TAKING CHARGE OF THIS SALON AND YOU PLAN ON DOING NE THING ABOUT BOOSTING THE BUSINESS HERE YOU HAVE TO DO WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO EVEN THOUGH U DON'T WANNA....
We have even had several clients complain about the heavy smoke smell in our salon... IT BAD!! Although I gotta say it has improved some... But they still do their own thing if she not there... WHICH SUCKS!!!

Anyhow... I agree with you 100% it not fun to work with ppl like that!
~Leslie ~
Hope things get better for you~

You should have seen our Christmas party....he hired a limo driver, and smoked pot and offered it to her......she declined and said she is a school bus driver in the same town........The rest of the night wasn't fun for me....

I am looking for another salon.
