Hi there...I have a 3 year old named Rosie...she started having "accidents" all the time and all over the house which is really unlike her ...we thought she might have a UTI. We took her to the vet and they took an xray. She has bladder stones. has anyone dealt with this? the vet said that we could try the "diet" method of dissolving the stones, but that was not a 100% sure to work and she could end up having to have surgery regardless. Has anyone treated their Shihtzu with diet and did it work? I would hate to put her through surgery if she doesn't need it...but I also don't want her to have this stone in her bladder for the next 4 months if it will eventually need surgery to be removed.
any advice would be appreciated please. I'm so sad. =(

I am so sorry to hear about your baby going though this. Missy started having crystals at 3 months. Her PH was way to high and the vet wanted to put her on a prescription diet. He felt it was because of her diet. I had her on wellness canned chicken. The vet felt that Missy needed less fruit in her paticular diet. Her ph was 9/0 and she would have been heading for stones. i got some test strips from Hocks pharmacy online and started monituring her urine. I put her on cranberry capsules. The vet found out what I was trying to do and put her on asorbic acid (a form of vitamin C I beleive). we kept checking her urine though his office and I was checking it daily. we were asking her body to run more acidic and her PH came down. I switched her to Eagle Pack Holistic Canned chicken. also she did not drink alot of water and the vet told me to put her on canned food. I still to this day add a little water to her food. I also cook, chicken, ground beef, salmon, sweet poetaoes, and eggs. all antibotic free and free range eggs and purified water. I am not sure if your dog had the same kind of crystals that missy had or if your pups PH is running high or low. I know Missys breeder uses Iams dry and I think its because this shihtzus are pre-disposed to this problem. you can go on to akc.org and look up shihtzus and if I remember right its a problem with shihtuzs. After 6 months on asorbic acid and a food change she is fine. I don't know if she just out grew it or if changing her diet did it. she never got the stones though we nipped it. please talk to your vet about this and if I can help in any way just let me know. I would say a diet change is in order but you may have to go to prescription food. please keep us posted sincerely, Denise and Missy PS. Missy just turned 4 years old.

My Shih-Tzu, Ling-Ling, had stones when she was 2. They were struvite stones which occur when there is bacteria in the body and crystals in the urine.

I caught the stone too late and one that she had turned into one too large to do anything but have surgery. She was 2 and that is a huge difference from 3 months. If you can hold off another 3 months it would be better for the puppy.

I take her to a holistic vet and she gave me a Chinese herbal formula called "Crystal Free". This product helped to dissolve the crystals. The important thing also is to get the bacteria under control so the stones do not form and I used plain yogurt for the acidophilus.

Good luck, I hope it all goes well.

Thank you for all of your thoughts. cic835 (sorry don't know your name!) Rosie is 3 years old and it sounds like we are in the same situation you were with your Ling-Ling. We got a second opinion and the vets pretty much concurred. The stone is too big and needs to come out. She is scheduled for the surgery on Thursday and I'm sure it will all be ok.

For those of you that have had dogs with stones....can you tell me what sort of diet you have them on now to prevent this from happening again?

Missy was on her way to stones. it starts out as urine crystals. I think you need to take a urine sample in and find out about the ph where it is. it is probably running high. Missys was and 3 years later she has no crystals. Not sure if she out grew it or the food and the asorbic acid which brought down the ph. you really need to speak to the doctor about this. Google the type of stones she has also. it will get in to the PH and that is the type of stones missy was going to get if we had not caught this in time. I will take a urine sample today. I do it once a month but use to every day or 2. I have her on eagle pack hollistic canned chicken, also non antibotic or hormone chicken, wild caught salmon and grass fed ground beef. I mix her food 50/50 and also add sweet potaotes and egglands best eggs. baked sweet potatoes a treat from trudies mom's reciepes. If you can ask your vet about the cause and google will will learn from this and it is not as hard as it sounds. there is a another lady here that went to an hollistic vet. I almost did that but did not need too. my vet was on to everything. missy had no bacteria but the yourgart she gets also. Hollistic is the best approach I think. Denise

Well we are day 3 post surgery and all is going well. It broke my heart to leave her on Thursday, but I don't think I would have made a different decision. They found, as they suspected, just a single stone. it was probably double the size of a pea, which for their little bladders is huge. There is a university in the mid west that is doing a study on these stones, specifically in shihtzus so the stone was sent there. When I get the results and the recommendations from the vet I will post that. I have to say Rosie did so well! she was pretty much back to normal the next day...the hardest part was trying to keep her from her normal activities!
Thanks again for all of your advice!

Thank goodness Rosie is doing well.  I hope and pray she will continue to do better each day. So glad this ordeal will soon be over for all of you.  Doris
