Hello, my name is Lee Ann and I have a 16 week old shih tzu, Maggie.  I got her when she was 7 weeks.  2 days after I got her she had parvo...stayed in the hospital for 6 days before coming home..recovered nicely.  Then, 1 week later, we were back at the vet with an ulcerated cornea, which is where we still are today.  She has made several trips to the vet, had her eye stitched twice, pain ointment and antibiotic ointment 3 times a day religiously for severaly weeks.  I was looking at ther today and the stitches have come out once again, her eye still looks irritated but she is not in pain at all (have stopped using pain ointment altogether bc she hasn't needed it).  Of course, I will take her back to the vet Monday.  My questions is, will she recover from this or is it inevitable that she will have to have the eye removed?  I love her to pieces!  She's my buddy!!

Awww, Lee Ann, I am so sorry your baby & you are going through this. I haven't had any experience with this. I guess your vet is the best bet, but maybe you could take her to another one for a second opinion? Maybe a specialist would be better? Just thinking out loud here.
Once again, I am sorry, hope it all turns out okay.
Hugs
Phyl

you may find she will grow out of it if its rogue eyelashes causing it then the vet may be able to freeze them out but some dogs have pop eyes and they are prone to ulcers you must be vigalant in washing er eyes face every day do not use anything except warm water and cotton wool wipe down the nose  never use the same cotton wool for both eyes always use a different piece when you wipe over the eye go from the nose out and slightly up so any eyelashes will be trained up not turning in...but when she is older the vet will be able to see them and remove them....

I am not very familiar with eye problems...can you ask your vet if there is a specialist you can take poor Maggie to?
Keep us posted...

Hi Lee ann I am sorry you have gone though all of this. Missys eyes lashes were rubbing and its a common shihtzu problem. Have yo taken her to an optomologist? Missy had some of her eye lashes removed they froze them just like rose said. She never had eye ulcers though but she would have. I would try and find an eye specialist if you have not got on.  My vet thought missy had blocked tear ducts. this was really not a real big deal the surgery I mean she recoverd fast. I would hope the vet would not remove her eye for this. The regular vets can't see the eye like a optamologist they don't have the equipment. Its kind of like buying tires from a gas station  instead of the tire store. If you do find an eye doctor I am thinking her eye will be fine. You can call your college. Here I would call Michigan state and ask if they had an optamologist or a specialty vet and ask. Good luck please keep us posted sincerely, Denise and Missy
