PUBLIC DOMAIN and REPRODUCTION RIGHT
As it has been over 70 years since Waterhouse's death, Waterhouse's paintings are in the public domain. Reproduction rights are then concerned with rights held by those who have produced photographs of the works (in other words, if you took a snapshot of a public domain work yourself, you could do anything you want with it). Normally, museums have commissioned photographs of their works and thus hold the rights to these photographs to be used in reproduction. So, a first step here would be to contact the museum where the work is held. You can also try obtaining reproduction rights from Art Resources or Bridgeman Art Library
IMAGES ON JWWATERHOUSE.COM
The images on jwwaterhouse.com (johnwaterhouse.com) are presented for educational purposes, including teaching, scholarship and research. All scans are in JPEG format at 72dpi which are entirely unsuitable for printed reproduction, and as such provide no competition for licensed, high resolution images of the copyrighted images.
Through the years, many of the images were found on usenet and various internet resources that no longer exist. Some images were sent to me from Waterhouse fans. If you believe that you are the original owner of any of the scans on the site, please contact me so I can give you proper credit for the scan. I also obtained reproduction rights to many of the images. These are the ones with the 'jwwaterhouse.com' word and logo in either the lower left or lower right hand corner of the image.
