I finally got a Rhuemy appointment. I was totally disillisioned. At first he told me that I probably knew more than he did about fibro . Then he said that my doctor didn't have the right to diagnose Fibro. But anyway.... he x-rayed me from head to toe and took a gallon of blood. I dont know what to expect from all this.... any ideas anyone?

It sounds to me that he didn't know what to do and so he did x-rays and blood tests. Try a different doctor.

He needs to rule out other causes, which makes sense.

I know that my blood is filled with, I can't remember exactly, but it's inflamation.  Every time I have blood work done, the dr would come in and ask if I had any pain.  HELLO - I have Fibro is what I would scream in my head.  New dr. who doesn't give me enough attention to my pain.  She gives me meds, but doesn't really have any answers either.

The Rheumatologist that diagnosed me told me to wear a cervical collar for sleep, and suggested heating pad, exercise, meds, etc. but seemed to understand the pain.

When I can, I walk in water, not on it, and it helps because I'm not so uncomfortable after.

Ask him if there is someone he can recommend you see, when you go back for the results.

Good luck.

It was white blood cell count that was excessive.  Just saw it on another post.

My rheumy wasn't very helpful either. I am shocked that yours said he doesn't know much about Fibro. I agree that you should find one who does.

I believe a specialist is required to definitely diagnose fibro. A family doc or general practitioner isn't fully qualified.

As for the blood. There are some general things they can look at to rule out other things. For example, they check your sed rate to see if there is inflammation, which could indicate things like rheumatoid arthritis. Fibro is non-inflammatory, so sed rate would typically be normal with it.

X-rays can show problems with the spine and other things that can cause pain.

Hi Spirit-

Every time I have blood drawn my sed rate is high.  I do take Mobic 7.5 every day and I guess this helps with the inflammation, I sure can tell if I skip a day.  I know fibro is non-inflammatory but have you heard that it can be a precurser for RA?  This is what I was told the last time I saw a rhuemy.  I always wonder if there is something else underlying for the sed rate to be high all the time.  My Ra factor doesn't come back positive though.  Any thoughts on this?  Thanks for your time.

Hi
I would suggest you try another rheumy or if not call a othopaedist and ask the office if he treats fibro.
Many Drs have to be educated by us, who have fibro.
The x-rays might show some things about RA or other things, but, fibro cannot be Dx this way.
The blood tests also cannot show fibro, however he may be checking your overall health, i.e.
liver functions etc.
Call around and talk to the office staff or ask for a nurse to call you back and ask her if the Dr treats fibro.
I hope you find something that works for you soon
Hugs
LinLin

I would more expect RA to be a precursor to fibro, than the other way around. From everything I have learned, fibro shouldn't in any way cause RA, since fibro is considered "non-progressive."

I don't think it would be all that strange to have both conditions together and unrelated.

Thanks for the insight and info LinLin and Spirit.  LinLin maybe I wasn't clear.  I have already be dx about 7 years ago with fibro.  The rheumy that dx this I no longer see because she is no longer in our provider plan.  However my PCP is wonderful(she is a Nurse Practioner).  I just think that it is strange that the sed rate(a test that looks for inflammation in the body) is always high.  That is why I believe there is something else besides the Fibro.  Thanks for your time though.
