Sometimes I like to just ask unanswerable questions. Or at least ones that not only take a lot of thought to answer, but inspire thought for a long time after. So here's a thinker for you. Do you know your actual mental limits? For the purpose of this discussion, I am considering only mental capabilities. (The same idea applies to physical capabilities, but given the nature of chronic illness, we won't focus on that.) For example: on the subject of math, do you know the limit of what you can and can't do. Do you think you can eventually learn more than you think you can do now? Do you think you have already reached the limit of your ability in that subject? The same applies to any subject: spelling, language, memory, strategy, etc, etc. Sadly, I must admit that I have never tried to find that upper limit on anything. Maybe I am afraid to find a limit. Maybe I am afraid that the limit will be lower than I want it. Maybe, to be moderately capable at many things, I can't be excellent at one or two things. So, do you know your mental limits in any area? If so, how did you find that limit? Do you honsetly believe that limit can't be surpassed? Let's talk. |

Good question, I believe that everyone can learn more. Well those that have functioning brains. I think that by reaching for your limits you raise them. It is kind of like reaching for a cloud. Everytime I learn something new it pushes my limit up. I also believe if you shut your mind to learning you are as good as dead. I believe that everyone has so much to teach no matter who they are you just need to know how to listen. |

What is the statistic...the average person uses only 10% of their brain? I think most of us are way too comfy with that 10%. The question is, how DO we reach into that other 90%? |

Well Miss Niddy Butt, you need a special saw. OK fine you meant use the 90%. It isn't that we just use a small section of our brain. We use all of our brain but only 90% So what we need to do is work on everything and expand our minds the most we possibly can. |

What if they are wrong? What if it has nothing to do with the brain and everything to do with the spirit? It doesn't matter if we use 100% of the brain if it's not the brain that determines intelligence. Personally, I think the brain only creates the link between body(where we express our thoughts) and spirit (where thought originates). Thus, everyone has an equal potential in a spiritual aspect. In the physical aspect, you can have problems with that link, which get labelled as learning disabilities, handicaps, vegetative states, etc. You could liken it to your internet connection: some people have dialup, others have DSL, and that rare lucky person who gets fiber optics.. :) |

I like the thought of the brain being connected to their spirit. I also agree I think inteligence should be measured only against the same person (I know what I am trying to say just too much fog so sorry.) I am totally believeing that the link in with the brain and soul. But I disagree that handicaped people, I am referring to mental, are not full of wisdom. They have so much to teach us if only we take the time. |

I believe that the only mental limits we have, we put on ourselves, or others have convinced us that we are limited. Once, many years ago, I was taken on a tour of a mental hospital. We were walking in a large room where the harmless patients were wandering around. There was a man sitting in the corner rocking and saying a number over and over again. The doctor motioned for me to follow him over to this corner. On the way, he said, "If you ever question the limits of our mind, watch this." We arrived next to this man. At first glance, he appeared to have a skin condition, but then the doctor said to him. "Jim, can you show me the number five?" This caused the man to smile and rock and say five, five, five over and over again. The doctor instructed me to watch his forehead and hands. Slowly the skin began to welt up on his forehead. Within less than a minute the number five appeared ! When I looked at the back of his hands, the number five showed clearly in large welts. The power of this man's mind was so great that he could do this, yet so weak that he could not live in society. What are our mental limits? I think we have so much potential! What may have seemed like a "super-natural" thing, in the past, may turn out to be an ability to "tap" into the parts of our minds that are not being used today. Crinkle |

smile...I think I have dial-up. :P crinkle, I've thought the same things myself...about ESP and all that just being a common thing that is only "awake" in some people. I don't think mental handicaps are even handicaps. I think they are just different. Some people are tall, some are short. Some people think this way, some that way. No handicaps. Just different. Theoretically, if there are areas of the brain--or actually links in the brain--that access unknown capabilities, then it is possible for someone to have only those different links and not the ones we label as normal. Oh...and for the record, niddy's bum is mine. |
