I am attempting to be the reigning queen of strange questions here, I think...

OK, so yesterday, I got my hair colored.  I do this about every 6 weeks or so, and have for years.  I get it done at the mall, so there usually is some shopping involved that day.  I don't feel I overdo it.

What happens is that I usually feel flared up later that day, and sometimes for several days.  I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this, and if so, why they have or think they have.  I suspect either the smell of the chemicals themselves or perhaps having my head back to be shampooed even though they have the ergonomic shampoo sinks.  Thanks and HUGS, Sue

I have not had my hair dyed (I can't dare cover up those white hairs I love so much) :) but I have sat in one of those chairs for a long time and what I find is that since you can not really stretch or move around, if I sit there for over 30 min., it all depends on how I feel that moment.  I will flare the next day, it could be from sitting at a baseball game, being in a long meeting or group, new or different smells have also caused flares for me.  If the smell is bad it will hurt, if the smell is good, nothing happens.  I wonder if you could explain your disability to the person dyeing your hair, ask them if you could stand or move around every 15 min or so for 5 to 10 min., they may object because it will take longer for them to finish you and move on to the next client, but the good ones will do it and not complain at all.  Those are the ones that get my business, referrals, and bigger tips :) :) :)
I hope this helps, if it doesn't let me know and we will figure out something else :)

My husband and I have been going to the same hair stylist for some time.  She puts the color on me, cuts my husband's hair, then finishes me.  I do move around some, as Paul and I have to swap seats for her to work on me, then him, then finish me.  I don't think she'd have a problem at all, and the salon is fairly big.  She knows all about my fibro.  Thanks and HUGS, Sue

Hmmm...that's a good question!
I know from my experience I cannot tolerate sitting in those salon chairs and ESPECIALLY with my head back getting washed and rinsed in the sinks! It will definately send me into a nasty flare for quite awhile. I'm also sensitive to the dyes and chemicals they use, as well, which will trigger migraines in me, so needless to say, I don't dye my hair! If I do get brave and dye my hair, (Lol!) which I have a few times, I usually pick up one of the kinds at the stores and do it at home myself since that way I have more control over making sure there's plenty of ventilation and air in the room while I'm doing it. I think some of the store-bought ones are possibly less harsher than getting it done at a salon and they seem to be getting better as far as "smell" goes. I also find that hairstylists can be pretty rough sometimes, so I always make sure to tell them I have chronic pain and to "go easy" on me! If they don't then I find myself a new hairdresser!

I don't put the hairdresser to blame for any of it, though.  She's aware of my condition and my needs.  I thought about standing at the sink instead of having my head back, as I've done that at home at times.  It's not really any easier on me, as I begin to feel the strain in my back and shoulders.  It's either grin and bear it or shave my head.   I could never reach up long enough to color on my own, and I don't trust the home products anyway.  My hair is difficult to color.  I don't want to give it up, because even when I'm a week or two late in getting the grays covered, I feel self-conscious.  Feeling bad for a day or two for 6-7 weeks of good I guess is worth it.  This time, we DID shop before I got it done, and we were racing around a bit trying to get everywhere before the appointment, so I think that's definitely part of it.  I started flaring more last week, but I think it's more due to the weather than the hair color.  Sue

Hi Sue,
Take a lumbar support pillow with you (use in stylist chair and at sink) and have your stylist put a folded towel under your neck at the sink.  Also ask her to support your head as much as possible while at the sink (that dropping down in the sink can be very painful during and after).  I was a hairstylist until fibro, and did this for several clients with lupus.  They said it helped them.
Good Luck :)
Jacki
