Hi Girls,
I was watching a DVD of a silent movie the other evening and was struck by the star actress. I was able to capture a frame and I thought it might be fun to see whether anyone in the group could identify the actress and film she starred in.
Do have a go, and I'll put on more as I come across them. Or, if you've a pic yourself, post it and test us!

Hi Nikki I'm hopeless on films/movies and entertainment was always my worst Trivial Pursuit (closely followed by art & literature) but as you've not yet had a reply, I thought I would make the first guess. My immediate thought was that it was Cleopatra, but anyway I know practically nothing about silent movies. Heading towards google I found out that there were 9 silent movies called Cleopatra (10 if you include Cleopatre) and 3 called Antony and Cleopatra. On the site I found, most had no pics. The only pic I could find that even vaguely resembled the pic you showed was: Cleopatra (1917) American B&W : Eleven reels Directed by J. Gordon Edwards I've never heard of her, but surprise me and tell me I'm wrong! Love TinaCortina xx |

Tina,
I think you had a really good shot at this. It's a lot harder than it seems.
It wasn't Cleopatra, but Theda Bara did play the role in another film. There was a clue, but you need to look at the description of the picture in the album. Let's just say ... doesn't her look just tell the viewer that she knows exactly what she wants!!!
Thanks for the website link, btw, that looks a useful resource, although it is clearly still young (the actress would be under N if the index went that far!)

Hi Nikki I must have nothing to do! Yes, it would have helped to have read the clues, but I guess I was trying to do at least part of it from recognition ~ and she definitely looked like a Cleopatra! Well having another go, but still not being sure of myself. I googled Beardsley and Oscar Wylde and got Salome, which I quickly confirmed was another of Theda Bara. Then using my own Silentera link I looked at other actresses that played the part and found Alla Nazimova. I put this into Wikipedia and also found references to the illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley. I note too that it is atleast available on DVD. I still can't trace your photo though and the ones I've seen of Alla Nazimova bear little resemblance to the one you posted. If I'm right, have you a link? If I'm wrong I think you should put me out of my misery! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I still prefer Theda Bara as the answer as in the pic from link below, the one that says 'the first Vamp', is at least similar to the one you showed I wonder if we could test Barbaras skills and if she could give us those very straight eyebrows; I think I may be a bit old for the sultry looks! Hi Tina,
Well done ... it was Nazimova in Salome. The still is actually one I took from the DVD (I know ... breach of copyright ... eek!) - I found it such a powerful image, I had to capture it.
The important thing, if I remember my photography correctly, is that to get the strong 'vamp' make up in black and white, is to use red make up as emulsion films are far less sensitive to red. I'll have to try that out ... as for the straight eyebrows, I'm sure Barbara can sort that out ;)
I'll try another picture soon, but try and make it a little more reasonable to guess!
