. The more soul cakes the beggars would receive, the more prayers they would promise to say on behalf of the dead relatives of the donors. At the time, it was believed that the dead remained in limbo for a time after death, and that prayer, even by strangers, could expedite a soul's passage to heaven.

"At the time"......it is called purgatory and still remains Catholic doctrine that people go there to be "cleansed" of their sins and may or may not be painful for the sinner.  It is a "safety net" for sinners where they go to pay for their sins before getting into heaven and according to the Vatican different people may spend different amounts of time there. Centuries ago the priests used to sell indulgences to the congregations with the promise that by buying indulgences you would spend less time in purgatory which is one of the reasons for Martin Luther sparkinbg up the Protestant reformation.

Halloween is a pagan ceremony.  My church has nothing to do with it since it is not Christian.
