No Grace, typesetting is just like typing, except you had to change typefaces on the computer.  We also had to fix that thing if it broke down. Noadays, they do all that without changing anything, just typing on the  typesetter. Yes, i worked on the compositions too. We called it keylining those days, today, all is done on the computer. We laid out the pages, put pictures to it, i remember we had a big camera to prepair the photos for publishing. We also did work for churchpapers and i had my own monthly paper for my Parents without Partners Group, they put out a newspaper monthly and i was in charge, this way it was done professionally. And it was lots of fun.
So you know how a newspaper works.  Waxing the typeset  pieces and putting them down.
This one was just a small one. They also had a store for wedding invitations etc. But i didnt work there. It was a family operated newspaper. All their children worked there. And i was sad when they sold it, they had a death in the family and a big operation bought it. Great to remember.

sylvia, i have just been reading your book, quite an interesting life you have lead, going to school in a castle! we do not have old-old buildings in the u.s.
my daughter lived in germany for a couple years, and she visited some old castles, and sent me loads of pictures,i love looking at the old barns the germans built here in the states,i believe they were the first ones to use stone, and those buildings are still standing.
it sounds like you gave your children a very nice upbringing, even if you did it alone.
 waiting for the next chapter,jeni

How Fascinating!  I worked at a Newspaper also when I lived in San Pablo, California.  I stayed home with my children until my youngest was 3, then I went back to college.  I wasn't allowed to work because their dad wanted me to stay home and take care of (his kids) which was fine with me because he worked at Berkeley University and we lived a nice comfortable life.  I majored in PhotoJournalism and became head photographer for the college paper for the entire year.  Believe it or not I minored in childhood education and ended up a school teacher.

As head photographer I was allowed to work for the West County Times, which was a small newspaper in our area.  I wanted the experience and ended up with my own Byline for my articles and for my photography.  It was so very interesting because they sent me out to take the photos and write the story.  I even covered the Lesher Party each year, me and one other person.  I did nothing to put the paper together, I just went out wherever they sent me as a reporter and photographer.  Couldn't get anywhere tho.  Most newspapers are family owned and operated.  They let you in but at a minimum,  Lots of nepatism.  They are still in business to this day.

I kept every photo and every article and column I ever wrote in a big scrapbook. Even kept all the ones from college.   Everything is turning brown now and I plan to refurbish the entire scrapbook with the new acid free sprays they have on the market now.

That was a really happy and fun time in my adult life.  When I get a chance I will write that story.  rosie

Wow, Grace and Rosie, great lives too in the publishing. But i found out, it became routine after a while too. But i remember the time fondly. Was fun. Sylvia

Jeni, not too much anymore for my life here. But will write one more chapter.
That was the castle i went to school in. Right side was elementary school and in the back was the high school.

As far as i know, they moved to another building now.
We had many castles in germany, i like the one in Heidelberg best, and we had one not too far from us, we went camping there in the summer, my school friend and i and my dog. That used to be our sunday outings, visiting castles. Or walking in the woods and the lake.
I cant remember the barns there to be stone, the ones i seen are all in wood.
OOps, the pic of heidelberg should have been here at the end.

Sorry, the pictures dissapeared. The first one is Heidelberg, it has the finest casle in Germany, partly restored.
The second one is the Castel in Bad Bergzabern, where i went to school.
The Third is the Weintor (where the Weinstrasse starts) And behind it is  Elsac, part of France.

I am so sorry all the pics dissapeared again.

Chapter 3: I had a great time in Germany, never went back, just good memories. They still send me invitations for the class reunion, but i never attended, probably not many of us left. Also could not afford it. Would be nice tho.
Like i said before, my life has settled down now. I am 72 and in fair health. I still enjoy going to family parties, in the summer i go to the city pool for excersizes, in the park for free music, but they are not always to my liking. I prefer something not so loud. Country music i love. We also go for picknicks and sometimes we go camping. In a trailor, no tents for me anymore. In the winter we go tubing, and i can still do that. The grandkids go sledding and i am watching only. Skying is a no no. I used to go regularly each year in germany, in the black forest, we were a member of the ski club and could use the cabin there.
I enjoy gardening now and dipping in the pool, if it is back up this summer, split last year and there is just sand there now, but a new one is waiting for spring to be put up again.
But now it is winter and very cold here in michigan. We have some snow. My son does the showeling for me or my grand son.
My daughter bought a house accross the street from me, but will sell it, she just got engaged again and will be moving after it sells. They need a bigger house. But she promised it will be in St.Clair Shores, they all like it here.
Should i post those pics again? Why dont they show anymore? They are still in my folders.
Sylvia

Hi Sylvia.... thank you for sharing more of your life story.  I enjoyed reading about it.  I've never been on any kind of ski's, neither snow or water.  So I'm quite impressed with anyone who has.  It does look like fun to go flying across the snow when I see them do it in the Olympics etc.

About the photos, yes, I would love to be able to see the photos again.  How about starting a new photo album on here with your name on it, and download the pics into your personal album.   That way they should always be there I believe.

I'm not sure why pics disappear.   Sometimes it's MSN, and sometimes when we move things from one folder to another, or go to the storage place and delete things there to make more storage space that can cause the red x's.   I get confused about it all myself.

Hugs, Grace

I think now the pics dissapeared, because my computer crashed a few months ago. I will find them and post them again. Here is my house.

This is the house we lived in since 1964 in Detroit. It is still there and somebody lives in it. We moved to St.Clair shores in 1966 and that is our house now.

It has off white siding on it now, the porch has been replaced. And most of the trees are gone, just the one on the left is there.

Thats from the side, the window overhangs are gone now. We modernized alot since then, new windows, paint . new roof etc.

This is my hometown Bad Bergzabern in germany.
Weintor - beginning of the Weinstrasse, the wine street, between France and Germany. Bad bergzabern is the biggest city on that street. My aunt and i did go there often to drink grapewine in the restaurant.
This is the castle i went to school in.

This time i posted them without using my storage space, So they will stay in here forever now.

This is the building i used to work in with media publishing. in Mt. Clemens. It has been erased since and public buildings went up instead.

This is another old building in Mt. Clemens, the next suburb of detroit from st.clair shores. It also has been erased since then. It was a bathouse with spring healing waters. After that it was a nursing home. Have to check sometimes what is in its place now.

This is the castle in Heidelberg again.
