Gunmen have opened fire at a number of sites in the Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay), killing at least 16 people and injuring others, local reports say.

Police officials said shooting was continuing and that the incidents appeared to be terrorist attacks. An unconfirmed report on the Times of India website said 80 people had been killed, and more than 250 injured.

There has been a wave of bombings in Indian cities in recent months which has left scores of people dead. Most of the attacks have been blamed on Muslim militants, .......................

Does anyone want to open a book on the likely suspects?  What odds are you giving?

This is what I call the xenopathic profit motive, it is probably a unconscious reflex. The people that create organizations in order to "Protect" their ethnic group from oppression, find that their power revolves around the oppression of their people. So when major progress comes about to resolve the situation which they were created to resolve; the leaders see their power base eroding and have to create more conflict in order to justify their existence.

George Bush is a very good example of this. In the early stages of the Iraqi insurrection he did absolutely nothing. The question we have to ask is why? It is simple in that his popularity and his fathers were very high when there was major conflicts and wars. There is no reason to achieve any goals because the GOAL was to create the conflict and that was the goal in the first place; so a endless war only aids those in power.

Amanpour: Violence comes at crucial time

Chief international correspondent Christiane Amanpour spoke about the situation.

CNN: An attack this large, this sophisticated, and carried out with no warning could have come from inside India, maybe, maybe outside, maybe a neighboring state could be involved. We turn to Christiane Amanpour. What do you hear?

Christiane Amanpour: Well, Tom, this is the worst attack in India in the last 20 years, where Islamic militants have been stepping up their assaults on Mumbai, which is not just the center of its filmmaking but the economic and financial hub of India.

They have often blamed terror attacks on Islamic militants based in Pakistan. Some, they say, are concerned about, for instance, Indian rule over Kashmir. Al Qaeda also has threatened to attack India in revenge for its policies.

Very, very interestingly, this comes at a time when the new president of Pakistan has, in fact, gone further than any previous Pakistani leader in saying they want to improve relations with India, in saying they want to jointly combat terrorism together. The Pakistani president even went so far as saying he would consider renouncing a nuclear strike on India.

This is a very confused situation. Although some group has claimed responsibility, nobody knows the motive yet.

We have seen this all before...

    • Conflict in Ireland from 1922 to 1923 resulting from a split in the Irish nationalist Sinn Fein movement over whether to accept the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921. The treaty ended the Irish Revolution (1912-1922) against British rule and established the Irish Free State

After a half of a millennium of oppression, Michael Collins (Irish leader)  was able to achieve a swift victory (as far as insurgencies go) and his own people killed him for achieving the goals which his organization was designed for and shortly after even more conflict kept soldiers employed for a very long time. That happens with in every movement to a greater or lesser degree and that is what modern Technological societies have to develop in order to maintain the peace.

Hopefully the Indian government realizes and adapts their tactics accordingly.

ClearestWilhelm do you really think potential attacks on the NYC subway system constitutes a lighter note? Like the bombing on the London buses?? Are you serious?

This is another terrible atrocity brought to the world by muslim extremists. I keep wondering how their brains work. Do they really think they are going to stop anyone from anything by doing this stuff? More likely they will cause reprisals on themselves and other muslims.

I hope and pray that the hostages are alive and will be rescued.

Are you serious?
Not always - it is not good for the blod pressure to be serious all the time.

The President of Pakistan is not he be all and end all of that place:

"Pakistan's spies 'support terrorism,'" by Tamim Hamid for Quqnoos, October 4:

A LEAKED report from Spain’s intelligence service has accused Pakistan’s spy agency, the ISI, of supporting terrorism.

Broadcast on Spanish radio, the report said the ISI provides terrorists in Pakistan with explosive material and hand picks governmental targets for the terrorists to eliminate.............

One terrorist caught at Trident Hotel: Mumbai Police

Mumbai:While the fire breaks out again at Taj hotel. The Mumbai police claims that NSG (National Security Guard) has arrested one of the terrorist. The terrorist has been identified as Abu Ismail from Faridkot, Pakistan. Meanwhile, there are reports pouring in which say that there is an exchange of gunfire at Trident hotel between the NSG and the terrorists. There are around 40 hostages inside the Trident hotel even now and that is becoming a main challenge for the NSG, the NSG is reported to be already inside the hotel, all set to flush the terrorists out

And Pakistan has asked for a massive loan from the IMF.  Do be sure you dig deep folks when they rattle the collecting boxes to help Pakistan stave off disaster!

It would not be the first time elements of the ISI have been implicated in terrorist acts.

Do you suppose they are using 'enhanced interrogation techniques'?

Blasts were heard across southern Mumbai on Thursday as Indian commandos prepared to storm the Trident-Oberoi hotel to rescue the last foreign hostages seized by Islamist militants in a series of attacks the night before..........................

....................Police earlier said all of the foreign hostages had been freed from another five-star hotel, the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower hotel, but AN Roy, the police chief of Maharashtra state, of which Mumbai is the capital, said as many as 100 guests remained trapped inside their rooms. .................

Indian commandos have rescued 39 people from the Trident Oberoi Hotel, but Britons are among hundreds of people still trapped in hotels at the centre of the Mumbai massacre that has claimed 125 lives....................Officials said the Taj Mahal hotel had been almost entirely cleared by commandos, with just one injured militant holed up in that building ..................The authorities blamed militants from Pakistan-ruled Kashmir for the bloodbath, which left 125 dead and at least 327 injured after simultaneous attacks on at least seven targets in Mumbai (formerly Bombay). ............The British man killed in the attacks was named as Andreas Liveras, 73, who was gunned down moments after he phoned the BBC from inside the Taj Mahal hotel to give an eyewitness account of the terrorist attacks.  Before he was hit, Mr Liveras, who built a £315 million fortune from his eponymous luxury yacht charter business, described how he had just sat down for dinner at the Taj Mahal when the shooting began. .........................

If you really cared you would be worried about how many more are going to be killed:-
Friday, 28 November 2008
..................The large majority of fidayeen attacks in Kashmir were perpetrated by one such organisation, the Lashkar-e-Toiba, headquartered in Pakistan and founded and led by Pakistani religious radicals. ..........The gunmen who attacked two luxury hotels, and a fashionable cafe frequented by visiting Westerners, have brought the "war" - as they see it - to India's elite class, and to affluent Westerners living in or visiting India's most cosmopolitan city.................
This could lead to the deaths of millions of non-whites.  Will that make you any happier?

The US has usually backed Pakistan in the past - but now that India is set to be the only counter-balance to China in the area Pakistan will have to be dumped.  What can Pakistan bring to the table now?

TWO British-born Pakistanis are among the Mumbai terrorists, Indian government sources revealed today. They were captured with eight others after commandos stormed two hotels and a Jewish centre to free hostages.
There, was that multi-cultural enough for you?

Here is something else you can be sick of reading:-
Friday, 28 November 2008
................Amid conflicting reports about the end of the siege at Nariman House, home to the Jewish outreach group Chabad Lubavitch, it emerged that several of the small group of hostages held inside had been killed.

"Five bodies of hostages have been found inside the Chabad House. We still don't know whose bodies," Israeli diplomat Haim Choshen said. .......................
