Well gang we have been playing for days and days, and there are several breeds of birds I would like to expand on for the Library.. We need to get busy and gather, write and aquire all the information we can before spring comes, and our busy season begins... So I have picked the Black Australorp for us to begin with... this is what we know... Do you have any further information...History, Habits, Photos... Would you like to adopt this breed, and do a complete article for the library on it... Contact me if you would like to Adopt the Black Australorp.. Variety : Black Skin Color : White Egg Color : Brown Origin: The Australorp was developed in Australia from Black Orpington stock. It is smaller than the Orpington with a trimmer appearance. Characteristics: Australorps have intense beetle-green sheen on the black birds, dark eyes, deep bodies and are very active. They are one of the best dual-purpose fowls, having gained attention in the 1930s and '40s by being one side of the successful AustaWhite cross. This cross of Australorp x White Leghorn became the successor to purebred breeds on many Midwestern farms. Broodiness was a problem with the cross and some markets discounted the tinted eggs they laid. Therefore, it soon fell victim to the inbred hybrid crosses of "Hyline" and "DeKalb." Australorps are good egg producers and hold the world's record for egg production with one hen having laid 364 eggs in 365 days under official Australian trapnest testing. |

I don't know much about them other than I'd like to get some! Now on the size thing....when we went to the county fair a couple of weeks ago there was an Australorp roo that was HUGE! Beat out any Orpington that I've ever seen by a fair amount. Just guessing but I'd say he weighed in around 12-15 lbs.! Jeannine |

I would like to also say that out of all my birds I only have 1 Australorp and she is such a sweetie. Very friendly and in your face (in a good way) Not skittish at all, very vocal :o) They have fun personalities. She lays jumbo brown eggs with nice orangey yolks. YUM! Candy |

I have bred and shown Australorps for the last 10 years or so. They are without a doubt my favorite breed. It is disheartening to hear about people showing huge Australorps. Aussies should reach 8 1/2 lbs for a cock and should be docked points for being oversized. They are the best tempered birds for a small farm and they lay beautiful eggs ranging from soft beige to deeper brown. How long of an article would you like on them? |
